Day 8 of #ResearchAdvent - Challenge

Right now the challenge I’m facing is trying to kick this flu. Was feeling better then was up all last night with a fever. Though generally the biggest challenge I face is the ever present transphobia & cis folks lack of awareness of it in academia.

Half of Labour’s policies are just “work or die“ and the other half are “just die“ cause you don’t deserve to be part of our society

Day 7 of #ResearchAdvent - Read

Used to be really into setting reading goals. I still do it but less to compete with myself and more to check in on my work/life balance. If I don’t read at least 2 books a month I know I’m over doing it. Here are two I’m hoping to get to over the holidays.

Got this snazzy toolbox for my art supplies! This is barely even half of them, though it is most of the stuff I use. Will be having a big clear out over the holidays and donating a bunch. Checked out some sketchbook pages from the past couple of years in the process.

Day 6 of #ResearchAdvent - Joy

Graduating from my PhD the same day as my first undergrad dissertation supervisee got their 1st class honours degree was pretty joyous! Got everything crossed at the moment that they can get some PhD funding. So excited to see more research from them!

Day 4 of #ResearchAdvent - Engagment

Last week I taught a fun session on dissemination where I got to discuss ways to promote engagement with our work outside of academic writing. I shared with my undergrads that I see teaching methods as an important part of my research dissemination.

Girlguiding and the WI have announced new policies that exclude trans women and girls.

GIRES has set out why this approach is not required by law and why exclusion harms those already facing the greatest barriers to belonging. Read our full statement here:

The general undertones of eugenics in British politics has got rather loud of late 🙃
I just want to know why the Health Secretary seems to continually fight on the side of Disease.

Day 4 of #ResearchAdvent - Hope

Recon I will mention this for a few of these prompts but the energy behind the new Glasgow Lab for Intersex, Non-binary & Trans Studies gives me hope. Been great seeing the impressive works of resistance from colleagues & students 🏳️‍⚧️

Day 3 of #ResearchAdvent - Appreciation

I appreciate my admin colleagues without whom I would be wandering around having no clue where I’m meant to be or what I’m meant to be doing. They don’t get enough credit for keeping academics on track. Must be like herding pretentious cats.

Day 2 of #ResearchAdvent - Values and Ethics

I’m ill so this will be brief. I take a human rights approach to my work & place particular emphasis on autonomy, privacy and feminist conceptualisations of consent.

In my data representation work this informs my centering of overlooked groups.

Day 1 of #ResearchAdvent

I’m a Sociology Lecturer primarily teaching quantitative methods. Have researched how population surveys represent sex, gender & sexuality. My work focuses on queering methods & pedagogies. Thinking a lot about if/how data representation can be used for oppressed groups.
Here we go!

Are you ready?

Just read a lovely message from one of my students. Hope students know how much we appreciate their feedback, positive and negative (although the positive does really keep us motivated 😅) 🥰

Just finished a pile of marking meaning I’m entering the most magical time of year: The week with little or no teaching and no marking 🤩🤣

Excited for tomorrow’s final Research Design & Method Selection session. Going to discuss data visualisation & dissemination. Calling upon my favourite Tidy Tuesday entries from @nrennie.bsky.social & @harveyhumphrey.bsky.social ‘s ethnodrama “As Is”.

Some glass half full (of shitt) thinking here: The “let’s be as explicitly cruel as possible” approach anti trans and anti migrant bigots are taking is going to backfire on them. Makes the job of communicating why solidarity & resistance is important soo much easier.

When the time comes that people have to at least act as if they care about trans people, do not forget and do not forgive a single person associated with this who isn’t speaking out about it now.

Don’t let them say it was a different time. Don’t let them say they didn’t know. We know.

Solidarity with Edinburgh colleagues!
Don't cross the picket line!

We are on strike because of UoE's budget cuts that have and will affect students and staff.

We are striking for a better university, join us!
