FA Cup 3rd Round 1975-76 January 1976 - a #referee for @refbooks.bsky.social to identify. I haven't a clue who the Linesmen are!!
kenstephenson.bsky.social
A bad couple of weeks for Liverpool - three consecutive defeats! @no1lino.bsky.social Hopefully Newcastle are starting to turn things around after losing to Liverpool & Arsenal at home!
kenstephenson.bsky.social
A problem in football though is pundits saying decisions are incorrect when according to the Laws the decision was correct-eg a goal scored by Newcastle at Tottenham last season when the ball hit Joelinton on the arm accidentally before another player scored.Pundits abused the ref for being CORRECT!
kenstephenson.bsky.social
I respect that argument but it happens rarely so I don't think they needed to totally re-write the Law relating to handball.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
In general it is regarding handball but I would get rid of this nonsense about unnatural position and ruling out goals because the ball hits a player on the arm as well. It's a load of crap.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
Yup, it's a good way of dealing with it. The worst part of it is when players are penalised when the ball hits them on their outstretched arm from behind them after jumping to head the ball. I'd go back to the old rule - penalise deliberate handball only!

Correct, he's also an utter hypocrite, he gets all huffy when he is questioned while squealing for freedom of speech when it comes to anybody who incites riots and violence. He's a vile repugnant mini Trump.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
Correct. I thought you'd recognise him! Burns was one of England's top refs in an era when England's refs were top notch!
kenstephenson.bsky.social
6 bookings in a match didn't happen often then, now it happens in most matches!

Leeds V Everton 1975-76 - a #referee (on the right of the screenshot) for @refbooks.bsky.social to identify. I reckon you'll easily identify him!
kenstephenson.bsky.social
Correct! Yes he was Welsh - he refereed Newcastle V Rangers in the 1969 Fairs Cup Semi-Final when Rangers supporters invaded the pitch in an attempt to get the match abandoned. He was better known as John (his middle name). His full name was William John Gow. I wasn't certain you'd recognise him.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
I think the goal kick law is crap as is the handball law.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
@refbooks.bsky.social A well-known Welsh FIFA #referee for you to identify. It was from the 1975-76 season in his penultimate season as Football League referee.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
My criticism of Elleray is not with VAR,it is pointless law changes-the kick off, goal kick etc.The laws relating to handball are now so shambolic I dont think even refs understand them properly! The stupidest law is a player can be sent off while making no contact but neglible contact is a caution!
kenstephenson.bsky.social
You say that about VAR being better in Uefa competitions but I have to say the worst VAR decision involving Newcastle was in Europe - PSGs ludicrous penalty when the ball hit Livramento on the leg before hitting him on the arm cheating us out a win in the away match after destroying them at home.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
Elleray was an excellent ref but a crap administrator who has wreaked havoc on the Laws of the Game with some stupid unnecessary changes making an uncomplicated game complicated.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
My view is the game evolved and generally gets better but VAR has ruined it at the top level - I was watching an FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round match between National North teams yesterday - when the ref made a decision it didn't change it was so much better than the waiting in the Premier League.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
The game was much better without VAR, I think it should be abolished at all levels.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
It is from today's Sunday Post. It was highlighted because It happened 40 years ago.
kenstephenson.bsky.social
I thought you'd recognise him!

From 1985. Rangers manager Jock Wallace confronting the #referee after Rangers lost 3-0 to Aberdeen at Ibrox and having two players sent off. Can you identify the ref @refbooks.bsky.social?
