🧵 Here’s how the San Francisco/Bay Area changed in 2024 through the lens of real estate. This topic was my entryway into full-time journalism and it has taught me so much about how wealth and power influence our daily lives. It’s been a thrill to be in the @sfstandard.com newsroom:

Encouraged by the lineup combinations that Kerr tried tonight. Podz is trending towards backup 1 imo… Hield, Moody, Richard, and eventually Melton are all in the running for the two.

"In my philosophy, in order to grow, players don't need to know," Pochettino said. "When you don't play, deep down, you know why."

This philosophy outlines the biggest difference between Pochettino and his predecessor, Gregg Berhalter.

Saw this walking around San Francisco today. Daniel Lurie’s embrace of business has gone way too far IMO.

Today is the last day Rabia and Mohammad Waqar are operating their Mashaallah Halal restaurant inside the SF Centre Mall.

Even though the property has been struggling, it’s here where they became bonafide stars. Thankfully, they’ll only be down the street on Fifth & Folsom!

Yep, hate to say it, but the chef who said it should be knocked down and built in a way that can stand up to the elements… is prob right!

This is the part of the culture of thought that Bruce Arena identified as holding San Jose back when he first arrived. The veteran coach will need to keep chipping away at some of that risk aversion if he hopes to make the Quakes a perennial playoff qualifier.

“From what I see, we always wait to concede a goal before playing in [an aggressive] way,” captain Cristian Espinoza added. “It’s like we’re hesitating too much. When the game starts, we don’t take risks, we don’t go forward, we don’t play well. Then, when we get scored on..."

Will it be possible to bring back San Francisco's famous Cliff House in the Outer Richmond? @kevinbtruong and @leahygarrett talk to the operator, his former business partners, and an acclaimed chef who ultimately passed on the project to find out 👇

The future of the Cliff House is on a precipice
Cliff House operator Alexander Leff says the landmark will reopen fully by 2026, but exorbitant reopening costs and Leff’s mixed record on his other seaside ventures cast doubt on a swift revival.

San Jose’s path to the postseason is perhaps the slimmest of the bunch. They have back-to-back road games against San Diego and Vancouver — two of the conference’s best — and close out the season against Austin FC on Oct. 18.

San Jose was facing a must-win game at home last night against St. Louis. They responded by conceding three goals in the first-half, leaving Bruce Arena at a loss for words.

“If I knew the answer to that question we’d have 30 wins,” he said.

Bruce Arena at a loss for words as San Jose's playoffs odds fizzle
The Earthquakes dropped their third straight game on Saturday against St. Louis City, behind yet another poor defensive effort.

San Jose is down 3-1 to St. Louis City at HT. Deflating. The Quakes are finishing their season on a free fall and are simply getting outplayed by everyone around them in the table. This was a must-win and they’ve conceded 3 very soft goals. Lots for Arena to ponder…

Compared to folks in SF, "Sunnyvale developers have a much simpler axiom: We have built it, and they have come." sfstandard.com/2025/09/18/s... @kevinvnguyen.bsky.social reporting on the Silicon Valley city that's both boring and booming:
Sunnyvale, tech’s ultimate industry town, is booming
Timing is everything in real estate, and this unassuming South Bay city is having its moment.
