More refinements to the WIP. The stained glass treatments came out nice in the final glance. Ready to move on to start the figure silhouettes on the obsidian slab next. #mandala #wip #mandalaartist #nycartist
WIP on the central medallion for the next Mandala painting. Stained glass effects. #mandalaartist #mandalas #nycartist
My Audible account turned back on after months on pause. I've decided to go back to my childhood and renew my familiarity with Lloyd Alexander's fantasy series "The Chronicles of Prydein", one of the most under-rated folkloric fantasy sagas of all time. #welshmythology #theblackcauldron #arawn

Finally found my 'tribe' while researching early 20th century Mandala artists who also studied and practied the occult formally. Who knew?

Meanwhile in the center of the medallion, the treatment of the six-petaled rosette suggested playing with the textures and construction of stained glass windows. Base color is blocked in for the whole medallion, but making the glass glow is next.
The spirals on the medallion border will be built up to try and show a celadon-glaze bas relief tile effect using the sacred patterns of the sacred regalia of a high priestess, the Amber & Jet necklace. (https://museumofwitchcraftandmagic.co.uk/object/necklace-4/)
Daily efforts continue on the next Mandala. Ugly happens before it gets good, but I have begun to feel a number of artistic questions beginning to suggest their own solutions, and a direction has emerged! #mandala #mandalaartist #wip
Glimpse of the greater work in progress. Stay tuned this week for more WIP photos!
Magnolia petal treatment for the Medallion mounted on the obsidian slab underway. More to go before done, but I'm blocking in more than just the basic colors as I go.

The rule is skip the details, limit yourself to a couple of minutes per thumbnail. But if you use textured brushes you can pull out scene that's quite loose, but could easily be used to paint from. Artist shorthand ftw... in sketches.
Finally remembered you have to work from background to foreground to get the atmospheric perspective correct. Still waking up, but starting to at least pull the distance sensations back in.
Had to remind myself of how to build these without getting bogged down in layers or details. Sorted it out after this one.
Began getting back to the Values Studies 1-minute sketches daily. It's been a while, but I found my way back to where I left off pretty quickly. All to help create depth and interest in scenes. These are fun.
Finished the initial 'scratches' treatment for the outer ring on the Obsidian slab for my next Mandala. It will be good to finally start in on the more colorful elements. Although I did layer subtle planes of color in the slab as I went.

No wonder I was having such a terrible time with the Before sketch. I literally have to retrain my drawing hand (left hand) to handle the numbness and mobility concerns of my left-side nerve damage.

I'm really glad I started -- this HAS to be regained, however much can.
I realized as I started up working through the warmup exercises for the Scott Harris Character Drawing course that I have not actually tried to *draw* since the stroke.

Yes, I have been painting. But drawing in realism requires a kind of control that, post-stroke, I have to relearn.

Whups.
No one said this journey would be easy or fun. Just worthwhile.

Trust the process, acknowledge my hangups, and get the heck on with the course before I start to cry at the futility of everything.

Ah drawing, for such a simple skill, it seems to hit deep with the insecurities on me.
I know that this course is the answer. I've watched the whole thing through before starting it previously. But I come closest to hating myself as a person when I look at this art, and I need to get over this shit so I can start to learn for real.
I have not resisted anything this much in a long, long time. There's real toxic shame knotted up here in figure drawing. All the inadequacy and fears that I'm not "real", well, look at them here for all to see.
Finally Started the Scott Harris Character Art course again. After a whole week of refusing to even begin the "before" sketch, I finally just shat this out, just to say I had done it and had pushed past it.

Doc appointment. I managed finally to get my BP down below 140 systolic for the first time since being diagnosed with hypertension.

What did I change?

Apparently all it took was giving up corporate work for an ad agency. Who knew?
