Too easy to say it will happen when the time is right but that time never comes so it’s important to take that action now.

→ Share appropriate challenges
→ Let staff handle complexity whilst you support them through it

You're showing potential leaders that headship means carrying everything alone.
3/6 Deputies who wait for you to solve problems. A team that checks with you before taking action.
The more capable you appear, the less capable everyone else becomes.
2/6 Every time you step in to handle something they could manage, you're telling them they can't cope.
The result? Staff who say 'I'll ask the head,' rather than making decisions.
1/6 Your 'good leadership' is creating passengers.
Every time you say 'I'm protecting my team so they can focus on teaching,' you're training them to be incapable.

I always reminded staff that with so many stakeholders, we’d never please everyone. A worthwhile lesson.
It’s about that stretch creating kinetic energy that propels you forward. Not the stretch that causes you to break.
I talked about this in my wellbeing workshop for heads this afternoon. You do care but you give short shrift to distractions. Your compass is set and you move in the direction of what you believe is right for your pupils. You have no fear of the ‘headteacher police’. Not come across them yet.
That’s really crappy & I can empathise having been there. Speak with your Chair about what’s going on in terms of the tricky stuff. Stuff to celebrate - list it. Our minds are Velcro to the negative and Teflon to the positive. Be kind to yourself.
