I mean, to be fair, we did have a mysterious Proto-Uralic *x sound in Uralic studies as well that has nothinh to do with IPA x.
Cell biology is full of the weirdest etymologies on earth: "X chromosome" named by a German biologist in 1891, with the "X" denoting an unknown or mysterious element. (The Y chromosome was named later, because it was the next letter in the alphabet.)

My second favourite: chromosome, named by another German in 1888, from the ancient greek words for color (khroma) and body (soma), because the thing absorbed his dyes under the microscope??

My cousin Marinko died age 60, unexpectedly. He was one of 9 siblings whose names my dad made me learn by heart when I was very little. Now they're 8 and it just hits differently. Rest in peace Marinko, I will miss you.

I am a German native spaker but I do learn new phrases sometimes:

anheimstellen - hand over

Ranküne - a secret grudge

an der Krippe sitzen - to be at the food source

Wasn't aware that the semantics changed from trough > crib. Thanks baby Jesus.

Just checked the Marina Abramović exhibition at Albertina Modern. Counted seeds of rice as part of an art work. That was relaxing.

Ended up reading Sátántangó as html, two chapters in. So blessed I'm able to read it in Hungarian. I mean I don't even want to know what translators had to do with sentences like

Azt a rohadt kibaszott kutya úristenit!
Does any one know where to get anything by Krasznohorkai in Hungarian in Vienna?
