Hold My Heart -- Out now

A serial killer story that takes a sharp turn into the weird and never comes back.

Hailey Piper: "Seductive to the core. Hold My Heart is an intriguing thrill, its world tinged with noir atmosphere and a passion for grime on skin and tongues on blades."

I’ve got no way to really “sell” Casual as a holiday buy… but the people at Lit Hub seem to like it, so maybe you will too lithub.com/memory-rehab...

So today is Thanksgiving. Would be if I celebrated in this far away country. That brings up a lot of memories. And always makes me think of this excellent story by @kojiadae.bsky.social published by @apexmag.bsky.social

I'm just a writer asking awards and publications to define what they mean by "indie".

There are indie publishers -- are the writers with them considered indie writers? Or do you mean only self-published?

Please. Clarify when you use this word.

If folk horror is your favourite genre, we've got plenty for you. Something mysterious lurks in a Scottish loch in Anthony Engebretson's Sair Back, Sair Banes, while in Mazi by Koji A. Dae, eyes watch from the walls of a rural Bulgarian cabin.

Meeting Your Heroes

If you could meet a historical writer, who would it be and why? I don't think I've ever fully understood the "if you could meet any historical figure, who would it be?" question. I didn't take it literally. When someone asked I never imagined hanging out with a writer. I just…

What are you proud of in your writing? And how do you feel about sharing your accomplishments? Join me on a messy journey into pride.
A Moment of Pride
What are you most proud of in your life? This is an interesting question because, for my brain type, pride is fleeting. It is a moment of accomplishment, a “look what I did” butterfly held timidly in cupped hands and that flies away as soon as I release it… and then I move on to the next mountain. I wonder if having pride is something ingrained in childhood, similar to having a good memory.

Flynn is a master of the horror of the home. Sharp Objects may be one of my favorite serial killer books.

You don't have to read in your genre and you can absolutely make space to daydream about things not connected to your work-in-progress.

Defining (and redefining) Success as a Writer

Defining (and redefining) Success as a Writer
When you think of the word "successful," who's the first person that comes to mind and why? It makes sense to explore success after exploring values. Values are well and good for inspiring actions and guiding choices. But what can I celebrate? What are those little (or big) milestones that I am working towards? It's also a timely topic because yet again I've been talking with my friends in multiple writing groups about how difficult it is for writers to "make it" today.

I'm excited Hold My Heart broke top 100 in one of the categories. It's super niche, Monster & Creature Horror... so it probably means nothing... but sometimes I need a little confidence boost, and that helped.

Goals, Values and.. principles?

Today's prompt: exploring values and principles in my life and writing. It was a fun exercise. What values drive your writing, and how do you express them?

I've come full circle in this exploration of serial killers in fiction. What kicked everything off was Crushing Snails by Emma Murray, and about a year later, I've arrived at Murray's next book: Shoot Me in the Face on a Beautiful Day. Once again Murray features a serial killer along with a brutal female perspective that rips your heart out, stomps on it a few times, and doesn't quite put it back together.

I've had a really hard time these past two months. I had to go back to the psychiatrist and go back on meds and things are slowly evening out... and I'm grateful that I have these resources.
But through it all, perhaps the most helpful thing, has been going back and listening to early Ani DiFranco.
