Today, on #WorldHabitatDay, we’re reminded that every space we shape plays a role in how people and nature coexist.

This year’s theme, “Urban Crisis Response,” challenges us to confront the pressing realities of climate disruption, biodiversity loss, displacement, and inequality. #ClimateAction

On 17 Sept, I'll be on the jury for the @architecturetoday.bsky.social‬ Awards, recognizing “buildings that stand the test of time”.
As the first #LandscapeArchitecture professional to be included in the jury, I am very aware of the honor and responsibility.

On July 12, I attended “A Weekend with Fergus Garrett” at the Landcraft Garden Foundation in Mattituck, NY. Fergus shared the history of Great Dixter's transition from strictly ornamental considerations to become one of the most biodiverse landscapes in the UK, & one of @nytimes.com top 25 gardens.

Great @nytimes.com article "The 25 Essential Gardens You Must See" www.nytimes.com/2025/05/06/t...
The article is engaging for the discussions and the criteria used, as well as for the background stories on the gardens.

A wonderful time at Global Pride in Washington. But #Pride isn’t just a month - diversity isn’t just slapping a flag on a logo. Diversity is a way of thinking: especially in the creative disciplines. #Creativity requires #diversity for true #innovation and progress.

The Avanade Intelligent Garden by Tom Massey & Je Ahn at RHS #ChelseaFlowerShow included a structure of sustainable mushroom-based building material. Renewable and biodegradable, it can be grown competitively at $1/lb; mycelium-based building blocks can be 80x cheaper than cement and gypsum blocks.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a great place to learn about how healthy plant communities are entwined with design. Sustainable plant communities create thriving landscapes: places where plants will flourish over the long term to create spaces where people will flourish too. #urbandesign #placemaking

'Cha No Niwa,' by Kazuyuki Ishihara, is a Japanese Tea Garden in the midst of the bustling RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The merging of tea garden design and ikebana and a subdued plant palette results in a gentle re-interpretation that engenders quiet reflection, in the heart of the Chelsea chaos.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a celebration of nature and creativity that offers a vibrant and inspiring experience, fosters community among plant enthusiasts, professionals and the public, and offers an opportunity to promote an appreciation of the natural world and the potential it represents.

“Landscape is history made visible.” J.B. Jackson

Fostering the appreciation of landscapes of historical, ecological, and design importance is one of the key reasons that I’m so proud to have joined the Stewardship Council of The Cultural Landscape Foundation.

I want to honor Barry Benepe, who passed earlier this month, age 96. He was one of those who advocated for & established what is now the largest farmers’ market network in the country, and helped revive NYC's neighborhoods and preserve 000s of acres of regional farmland.
