Life's a beach! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ So many wide, sandy and deserted #beaches in #Tasmania

Here is a south Australian specialty.. the Hooded Plover (Thinornis cucullatus). Threatened - like so many beach nesting birds - by human disturbance. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #waders #WaderWednesday #plovers #shorebirds

Another #WaderWednesday is upon us. Here is a Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) taking flight. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #shorebirds #waders #oystercatchers

Today we had a precious cargo in the van. We found a Swift Parrot struggling in the tall, wet grass. It didn't seemed to be injured but couldn't fly, so we took it to a local wildlife rehab vet. Critically endangered with only about 500 to 700 left in the wild. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia

One of the rarer #parrots in the world... the critically endangered Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor). Breeds only in Tasmania and winters in SE Australia. Logging of old growth eucalyptus forest and predation by introduced Sugar Gliders has decimated populations. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia

Flame on!! ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ˜€ Another colourful male robin from Tasmania. Flame Robin (Petroica phoenicea). #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #robins

Cute little male Scarlet Robin (Petroica boodang) on Bruny Island #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #robins

Another great cuckoo from Tasmania.. one that I missed last year in NZ. Shining Bronze Cuckoo (Chalcites lucidus). Migratory in southern Australia and NZ, heading to Northern Australia and the East Indies by late summer. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #cuckoos

Fan-tailed Cuckoo (Cacomantis flabelliformis) at the Inala Nature Reserve on Bruny Island, Tasmania. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #cuckoos

We were very lucky to find this Australian Crake (Porzana fluminea) out in the open long enough to get a photo. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #crakes #rails

Sometimes I struggle with big gull ID. But here's one species that you never have to struggle with in any age or plumage because of that absurd, big-ass honkin' bill. ๐Ÿ˜„ Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #gulls #seegulls #SaturdayLaridae

Bennett's Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus). I wonder if Mr. Bennett knows that his wallaby is running around loose. ๐Ÿ˜‚ #WildAustralia #WildTasmania #wallabys #kangaroos

Crescent Honeyeater (Phylidonyris pyrrhopterus) #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #Honeyeaters
November 21, 2025 at 11:12 AM
Another Tasmanian endemic.. Black Currawong (Strepera fuliginosa). If you crossed a raven with a grackle, this is what you might get. ๐Ÿ˜„ Dig that crazy beak! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #currawongs
November 21, 2025 at 11:09 AM
Yellow Wattlebird (Anthochaera paradoxa) .. one of 6 Tasmanian endemics we saw today. The largest member of the honeyeater family in Australia. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #Honeyeaters

Australian Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus australis). I think this is the only Acrocephalus warbler found in Australia. Not like Europe that has many members of this genus. #BirdingAustralia #warblers #reedwarblers #BirdingMerlbourne

A baby Australasian Swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus) trying to figure out what to do with those gigantic feet. I think they hatch with fully grown adult feet and the rest of the body has to grow into the feet. ๐Ÿ˜‚ #BirdingAustralia #BirdingMelbourne #BirdingVictoria #swamphens #moorhens

The longest neck I have ever seen on a turtle... the Eastern Long-necked Turtle (Chelodina longicollis). It doesn't retract its head into its shell like other #turtles, but has to fold its head in sideways because its neck is so long. ๐Ÿ˜€ #WildAustralia #reptiles

No Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus) in Melbourne, but 600 km (373 miles) south in Hobart, there was quite a few. They were even nesting on a flat gravel roof just below my hotel window. The common big gull of the southern hemisphere. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania #gulls #SeeGulls
November 20, 2025 at 9:39 AM
Walking along the beach in Hobart, the Silver Gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) were following me and just screaming non-stop. I figured they had babies hidden nearby, but I never saw the young ones. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia #gulls #seegulls

This Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) had a nest only about 8 meters (26 ft) from the edge of a busy thoroughfare in Hobart. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia #oystercatchers #shorebirds #waders

Strolling down the beach in Hobart, I ran into this fellow. Tasmanian Native Hen (Tribonyx mortierii). A chunky, flightless moorhen endemic to Tasmania. #BirdingAustralia #BirdingTasmania
