You know what people (even transit-dependent people) want more than free buses? Faster, more reliable, more frequent buses. You know what doesn't help with that? Cutting funding.

Looks like Rod Dembowski wants to fully restart the debate about whether King County Metro should go fare free.

This morning he suggested a potential fare free pilot, citing the benefits of increased ridership against the relatively low farebox recovery rate Metro currently has.

Washington is in an all-out battle against climate chaos—from wildfires, to atmospheric rivers and corporate pollution. As federal climate action falters, it's critical that WA has strong local leaders prepared to fight like hell.

I spoke to both Senator @vandanaslatter.bsky.social and Insurance Commissioner @pattykuderer-waoic.bsky.social about this issue because I was worried about not just the availability but the insurance coverage. I was glad to hear that our state has our back. ❤️WA

“The new Standing Order allows most residents to go directly to a Washington pharmacy or clinic and receive the COVID-19 vaccine without an individual prescription. The vaccine remains covered by most private insurers, removing barriers and helping people stay healthy.”

Meanwhile we'd like to have some bike lane barriers at all. 🥲

I'd still love Seattle to start an art program for our protected bike lane barriers like Toronto's 🎨

Lansdowne is halfway done.

If the rain lets up, we will finish tonight, otherwise, tomorrow night .

Had a blast at the International Night Market last week! So many cultures, flavors, and neighbors all in one place. 🌍

Big shoutout to the bike valet—over 50 bikes parked! Love seeing Kirkland come together like this. 🚲
A smiling Kurt wearing a blue “Kurt” campaign hat, yellow sunglasses, and a white Juneteenth t-shirt takes a selfie at the International Night Market. Behind him are white vendor tents, food trucks with signs for gyros and falafel, and people walking around the market on a sunny evening.

✅COFFEE
A close-up shot of three people on a sidewalk, appearing to be engaged in conversation. A man in a blue cap is gesticulating as he speaks to a woman in a maroon shirt and a woman in a white hat. The woman in the white hat holds a sign that reads "End the Chaos Corruption Cruelty," with what looks like red paint splatters representing blood drops. Several other protest signs are visible on the ground, including one that says "SAVE PBS & NPR" and another that reads "LIBERTY JUSTICE FOR ALL!!!" with the text upside down. In the foreground, a black bakfiets (cargo bike) is visible. On top of the bike's front cargo box is coffee-serving equipment, including a carafe. Next to the coffee service is a box of Top Pot Doughnuts on a milk crate. A wider view of a small group of people gathered on a sidewalk next to a street. A man in a wheelchair on the right holds a sign that says "NO KINGS." Another man in a blue hat is talking to a couple of people standing nearby. The group is surrounded by several protest signs on the ground. A black bakfiets (cargo bike) is in the foreground, with coffee-serving equipment on top of its front cargo box. In the background, a street with cars and traffic lights is visible, as well as more people across the street. The weather is sunny with a partly cloudy sky.

These things are totally achievable but lofty plans are not enough. We need to elect people who consistently show the will to make good on these promises.

One of my takes is that Seattle already has the correct goals: the Climate Change Response Framework and Vision Zero would be transformational if we were on track to achieve them.
But transformational change requires bold leadership that we just don’t have right now.

Build great places and people will find a way to get there. Make it easy and safe to get there with transit (or bikes, or walking, or...) and people will do that.

Late last week I wrote about how the 2 Line is performing well by exceeding 200,000 boardings for two months in a row...and then Sound Transit released data showing that it jumped to 300,000 in July.

Turns out people do actually want to ride the train between Bellevue and Redmond.
July 2025 ridership hits 306.8K compared to 200,000+ for May and June

We have stolen the autonomy of children and so many others and surrendered it to car dependency. This is a choice and we can do better.
washingtonpost.com
The number of children injured or killed by cars while walking or riding a bike has fallen steadily since the 1970s, but CDC researcher note that this decline is not because streets are safer, but because fewer kids are out and about in the first place.
Kids need freedom. Dangerous roads make it hard to grant it.
Bigger cars, distracted drivers and worried parents mean fewer kids are roaming freely.

Outraged by the GOP calls to arrest state Democrats?

Get involved in your local government, in your local elections. It’s good medicine and maintaining a healthy democracy at home in your town is the first step.

Also, don’t forget to vote @kurtforkirkland.com and Shilpa Prem before tomorrow. ☺️
