Today, all my fun plans were quashed by snow, but grades for one course are done. I'm spending today alternating between creative writing, next term prep, more grading, research, housework, maybe squeezing some exercise in at home, since I couldn't get to my yoga studio. Accountability thread!

An idea is not a book, a story, a painting, or a film. Actually rolling up your sleeves and doing that work and learning how to do it and collaborating and reviewing and refining and editing and casting and directing and moving and dancing and BEING... that gets things done. THAT IS ART.
I said it before, will say it again -- generative AI fetishizes "ideas" while sneering at effort, execution, and education. That, despite Gen-AI being built on and out of other people's effort, execution and education.
A.I. and the Fetishization Of Ideas
In writing and in dispensing my (very dubious, probably shady) writing advice, I am often keen to note that ideas are bullshit. Most writers treat them like precious gems when really, ideas are lik…

Watching the New Yorker documentary on Netflix. I’ve been a New Yorker reader for a very long time.

The thing that really struck me is a scene from election night 2024. I’d never seen the cover they were going to run if Kamala Harris won.

It’s heartbreaking.

If you want to make a randomly banger playlist, go through a post on the subreddit TOMT (Tip of My Tongue) where someone is trying to remember a song. If it seems like a genre/era you like, just pop all the wrong suggestions from comments into a playlist together. Bonus if OP’s question is solved.

The Kennedy Center Honors ribbons are no longer a rainbow, signifying multifaced arts, probably because it is also synonymous with the pride flag. The utter pettiness of this administration is so hard to fathom. 🏳️‍🌈

Severance and Pluribus out here arguing against human exploitation, takeovers by tech bros, AI, capitalist oligarchy, yadda yadda, not to mention Black Mirror and before that Twilight Zone, and all I can think is how current people working in favor of destroying humanity PROBABLY CONSUMED 1/2

This is hilarious. And AI is sooooo much dumber than we think.

At this point, I just wake up so I can do the Wordle.

I think sometimes things fall apart when they’re supposed to so that you can be in a better fit for yourself. I think, too, you can get reinvigorated in your art from that process. Job hunting is VERY hard, but when you find a good fit, rejections don’t feel so bad.

Today: making my way through the snow to a 9 am strength training class. 🤞❄️

The president is a racist.
here's Trump's full racist rant about MN's Somali community: "Somalians ripped off that state for billions. And they contribute nothing... Ilhan Omar is garbage. She's garbage. Her friends are garbage. These aren't people that work... They come from hell & do nothing but bitch. We don't want them"

Today was grading, a Sculpt class, and now starting to get the Sunday scaries. 🤪 Winter break cannot get here fast enough!

In the time it takes to prompt AI to write in a “human” way, editing and tweaking, you could have had a writer write it.

The big snowpocalypse reports are coming in for my region. Ughhhhhh. I hate this so much.

If MSNOW was serious about trying to reach a bigger audience, they would take a cue from Faux News and make more of their content free. Free streamers for entertainment like Tubi, Pluto, and Roku prove that model can work. Why are we forcing people into a cable TV ecosystem? It’s old fashioned.

Today: 9 am reformer Pilates class, then doing a restaurant gathering for Thanksgiving. Tomorrow, I'm going to a restorative yoga class first thing, then making some sort of as-yet-undetermined vegan dessert to bring to Thanksgiving Part Deux.

I haven't talked about my writing much lately, except that I have a monograph coming out next month. I'm also working on a novel series. Book 1 is done, needs one last edit pass; book 2 is done and needs a first edit pass; book 3 just passed 50,000 words yesterday! Whee! Still a ways to go. #writing

Ground Control to Major Tom
Commencing countdown engines on
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I'm one

Found that towel I thought I lost yesterday, and had an outstanding barre class this morning! ☀️☀️☀️

Today: went to a blissful cardio sculpt class first thing in the morning. WFH the rest of the day. I somehow managed to lose the towel I was going to take to class between packing up my mat bag and getting to the studio, though, and that has me confused and bummed out. :( :( :(

Calling a reporter by a derogatory, sexist, sizist, and dehumanizing word is the behavior of a meanspirited child. This latest incident in "norms and etiquette no longer matter" has stuck in my craw. The sheer devolution in how adults are expected to behave--especially ones in power--is astonishing.
