The desperation in their voices echoes through the camp, as men, women, and children cry out for the basic necessities of life—food, water, and medicine. For years, Kakuma has been home to refugees fleeing war, persecution, and unimaginable suffering. But now, another battle is unfolding—a fight for survival in the face of dwindling food rations, chronic water shortages, and deteriorating living conditions. The world has turned a blind eye, and now, the refugees are speaking for themselves. A Crisis Ignored Until Now The warning signs have been there for months. Food rations have been cut repeatedly, forcing families to survive on a single meal a day. Water taps run dry for hours, sometimes days, leaving people desperate and weak. Medical supplies are scarce, and those who fall sick must endure their pain without treatment. For too long, the suffering of certain groups—especially LGBT refugees—was dismissed by those who believed their struggles were exaggerated. But today, it is no longer about one group or another. Hunger has no boundaries, and desperation does not discriminate. Now, every refugee in Kakuma—regardless of nationality, gender, or status—has been pushed to the edge. “This time, it’s everyone, “We have watched our children cry from hunger. We have watched people collapse from dehydration. We have buried too many who could have been saved if only they had food and medicine.” The Protest: A Last Cry for Help The anger reached its boiling point this week as thousands gathered, demanding urgent action.
