“Enveloped by a warm breeze rustling and impatient to flee nearby fields, I breathed in the April air, fragrant with lavender and wildflowers and a heady hint of love.”

The remainder of the quote from Ch 1.
“We stood for a moment, relishing the sudden silence, broken first by the soft frou-frou of sunflowers rubbing and rustling and waving a cheery welcome to no one in particular, joined then by the gentle burble of the Rhodanus river.”

From Chapter 1 of my novel, Gloomy in Arelate.

Happy Poetry Month!

I read this article today by Warren Buffett about a poem, If, whose relevance is timely.

In fourth grade, we had to memorize the last stanza of If, by Rudyard Kipling. Its words still echo in my mind to this day.

Such is the power of poetry.

"It’s called You-Topia, as in utopia, but spelled y-o-u. Its entire purpose is you,” said Doctor Luciano through his accent and meticulously groomed beard. “Doesn’t that sound smashing, Margo?”

Find out what Margo thinks by reading the rest of my short story, You-Topia, on April 22 by JOURN-E!
I am proud and honored that my micro-fiction piece, My Sister’s Pink Mustache, was chosen by Your Impossible Voice for publication in their next issue.

The oligarch, Marcus Junius Brutus, contrary to the principles he espoused as a Stoic, was personally arrogant, and he was grasping and cruel in his dealings with those he considered his inferiors, including provincials and the kings of client states. #knowledgeispower
Verres, the Roman oligarch famous for his extortion of Sicily, used the 3rd Servile war to make money. He accused slaves of wealthy Romans of joining Spartacus, only to ransom them back for a hefty bribe. #knowledgeispower
The Roman oligarch, Coriolanus, proposed withholding a grain shipment to starving citizens in exchange for reversing political reforms protecting them. An outraged Senate held a trial he refused to attend, instead joining the Voscians, whom he’d defeated and they attacked Rome. #knowledgeispower
Crassus, the wealthiest oligarch in Rome, sent agents to buy burning buildings from their desperate owners on the cheap. Then Crassus’ firefighters would extinguish the flames, Crassus would rebuild, and make bank renting them. #knowledgeispower

Women are not property. Being gay is not a mental illness. I chose to leave the playgrounds where those ideas can now be bandied about. I can’t change the world, but I can choose change over complacency. #choosebetter
