Tale of Two Tower Records. Tower Records Shibuya (Tokyo) absolutely buzzing with shoppers: a mecca for music lovers, idol fans, merch collectors, social activities and more. And the clerk told me that today was not crowded! International Anthem and Makaya McCraven prominently featured. #music

Finished rehearsing with William Parker to find these stunning performers at Delancey St-Essex St station (the dancer, I believe, might be Ja'Bowen). I love NYC.

Would love that! I’ve usually been able to grab $40ish roundtrip tickets but I have to plan well and early. Happy holidays!

My first visit and I was blown away. Very curious about the Lennie Tristano inclusion! General contribution to the genre? Charlie Parker connection? Spent all my time in the music section and didn’t see other sections so I’ll try to come back. DC via Amtrak is very affordable if I time it right.

Holiday research. Thoroughly enjoyed the tremendous music section of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in D.C. Intrigued to find Lennie Tristano’s name on the panel. (Braxton on there too, of course.) I’ll need to revisit next year for more.

It's given me a different framework and vocabulary of thinking about this way of improvising, and also really helped me think about how to approach this as an educator. (Also helped me when I improvise with Joe!)

Braxton festivities at Roulette reviewed, w/ wonderful mention of the Workshop and the Tri-Centric Vocal Ensemble performance. Happy to be quoted w/ my belief on human connection: “I can’t stress enough, the importance of being in the (same) room with each other.”

Clarity in bite-size pieces, detailed explanations of vocabulary, FANTASTIC reference material on composers and methodology, e.g., Cecil Taylor, Ornette, Braxton & more, clarifying the complex topic without becoming a "how-to" book, encouraging the reader to internalize/apply/extrapolate.
