I cannot express how exciting It is to find a Baumol’s cost disease mention in the wild
The reason services dont get cheaper is that theres people involved and thats baumol's cost diesease. LLMs seem to be ludicrously cheap and if ever they become cost prohibitive you can roll your own as a company for like no money apparently
When I see LLMs pitched as a guaranteed productivity tool for software engineering, the is the counterweight I keep trying to get people to seriously engage with and not handwave away is the future cost, and “oh everything tech gets cheaper” isn’t an answer. Services don’t and LLMs are a service.

When my neighbor’s mom passed I gave a memorial donation to their suggested charity, a local organization for UM athletes. Now I’m on their mailing list which is loaded up with cool events and offers but it’s all members only and I’m not eligible

One of the major reasons I decided to not pursue a faculty job w/ my PhD is that I wanted something with more work-life balance, where I could leave work at the end of the day and not be thinking about research/publications/grading curriculum development/ etc

I hadn’t had a stadium nachos in a hen’s age. I plowed through 2/3rds of the tray before recalling that the no-bags policy meant I left my Lactaid in the car. Oh no.
Then I took another look at the disgusting “cheese” & figured its relationship to dairy was long severed by chemicals & processing

I appreciate media coverage of increased property insurance costs (such as what I heard on @npr this morning) but IMO these stories should also include a discussion the profitability of insurance companies and trends in executive pay.
