Both RSA’s 4 Quiet Route Braid Estate identify a significant number of recommendations 4 proposed temporary experimental infrastructure. With so many improvements suggested it seems sensible to question whether the scheme is as safe as it should be in current form for local residents

Gr8 2 read CEC not planning tree cut backs on Braid Avenue. CEC tree management policy states need 4 2.5m tree clearance over cycle lanes. RSA 2 states dense tree canopies & angled growth pose risk 2 cyclists. If no major tree work by CEC planned how will the new cycle lanes be safe 4 cyclists?

Stage2 Road Safety Audit for Braid Estate Quiet Route flagged 20 safety issues across 5 themes: cycle lane hazards, junction safety, pedestrian crossings, design risks & signage. Worryingly despite the experimental & temporary plans safety recommendations include tree removal & drain readjustment.

The Braid Estate is’nt just beautiful it is protected. The Estate’s views, calm streets & heritage must be protected & not sacrificed to through traffic. We need safe streets for walking, wheeling & cycling in this fine area. Council traffic plans must enhance not erode. Morningside deserves better

I have created a simple map of Option3 to clarify the Council’s Braid Estate proposals. The official online plans are complex making it hard to see new infrastructure & how to travel through estate. Hopefully this version brings everything together in one clear view

Regressing to pre-Covid road layouts on Braid Estate is no answer. Modal filters work - less traffic, safer streets and more pleasant. ECC’s new plans feel like an over egged pudding. Fix what needs fixing but keep it simple, cost effective, green and in keeping with the area’s character.

Concerned about plans for cycle lanes on Braid Avenue that could mean cutting back the iconic tree canopy - a key part of Morningside’s character. This is a temporary trial (ETRO) so why risk permanent damage. We need an independent tree impact assessment and a restoration plan before work starts
