That's what Goodreads calls Rebecca Baum's new book, "The Brood," which is a literate exploration of the intersection of a cutthroat New York lawyer and a terrifying brood of cicadas. And it was a treat to see Rebecca give a reading from this literate horror novel last night at The Writers Room.
"A fascinating blend of horror and magical realism, [a] spine-tingling thriller" that "explores the complex relationship between women, their bodies, and the natural world."
What do YOU think about Security Council expansion? Please weigh in in the Comments.

"... Our group is united by the call for comprehensive reform of the Security Council, specifically by expanding the membership in both the permanent and non-permanent categories of membership."
King is also Chair of the UN Security Council Reform Group L.69, "a diverse pro-reform coalition of developing countries from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, [which] views reform as both urgent and essential. ..."
"Today, the world is not as it was in 1945. We are witnessing escalating conflicts in real time – from Ukraine to Gaza to Sudan, unprecedented global security threats, and rapidly shifting geopolitics – all challenging the lofty ideals and aspirations that underpinned the UN’s founding."
It's safe to say that, in the last century, geopolitical realities have changed ... a lot. So why, then, does the UN Security Council — the international body best equipped to address geopolitical challenges — look essentially the same now as it does when it was mandated 80 years ago last week? **
Its extinction — along with the more than three dozen other mammal species that've disappeared in the greater region — is a dire warning sign for all of us to pay closer attention to the intricate & fragile ecosystems that we're upending via the negative consequences of human-caused climate change.
In memory of the Christmas Island shrew
It never weighed more than a spoonful of sugar. Five or six grams of life, soft-furred and sharp-nosed, darting among the roots and leaf litter of a tiny island in the Indian Ocean. At night, its voic...

Just look at the NFL and Bad Bunny, which though it was about profit, not politics, the choice still "mirrors a much larger shift in business strategy."

"After the 2024 election, many feared the 'purpose economy' would fade the way 'woke' did. Instead, the opposite happened. [Now] sustainability, social impact, and inclusion are growth levers instead of moral imperatives."

The Nobel committee recognized Machado for keeping "the flame of democracy burning amidst a growing darkness" and "ever-expanding authoritarianism in Venezuela." It's a timely, annual reminder that we, too, need to keep the beacon of democracy shining.
Or where comedians are removed from popular broadcasts because the current administration doesn't appreciate the jokes.
And it's a reminder that things are not well in other countries, too, such as ones where a Justice Department is weaponized against former FBI directors or New York State Attorneys General.
When a political opponent has to go on the lam to escape prison — or worse — that's a reliable sign that things are not well in Caracas.
The recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, awarded today, is currently in hiding in Venezuela. Opposition leader María Corina Machado Parisca is in hiding because she tried to run against the current leader, Nicolas Maduro, in last year's elections.

Luckily, there are so many unsinkable optimists and activists, scientists and journalists, naturalists and philanthropists who are ignoring the corruption, incompetence, and existentially dangerous positions emanating from Pennsylvania Avenue and who convened last month during Climate Week NYC.

For all those upset about Bad Bunny performing at the Super Bowl next year (because he "doesn't sing in English"), note that the Super Bowl itself will be played in Santa Clara (not English), California (not English), in the San Francisco (not English area).
