After tonight’s game ended I was inspired to write something for the Mariners fan blog I’ve been reading since 2014. Decided I should share it here too.

(Also fuck it, this profile isn’t going anywhere.)
I've mentioned on here at least once before that I'm trans, recently. Maybe more if I've forgotten. I'm still not out of the closet in my everyday life but because almost my entire social existence is online the vast majority of my friends know me for who I really am over the facade I'm forced to put on. I shouldn't need to tell you that this is a tremendously shitty time to be trans in America. The people in charge of the country want us dead, and they're taking every step possible to make it so. Living in one of the safest and most friendly cities for us provides some comfort, but that can only go so far. Especially when I personally know and care deeply for members of our community who do not have that protection and live in much worse situations, with little to nothing I can personally do to help them. It's been sad, it's been scary, and it's been exhausting. I was very grateful to have this one distraction in a very silly and inconsequential but deeply meaningful aspect of my life. At several points in the last week I had reasons to hope it would keep going just a bit longer. But now it is over, and all I have left are my thoughts and feelings that I take away from it all. Recently I've made a new very lovely trans friend in real life. Not too long ago she was hanging out in my apartment and started venting about how terrible things are looking for us. Every word of it was true. But from somewhere deep inside myself my response came: "It will all be okay in the end. They will lose and be humiliated. We will survive and thrive. They cannot defeat us." Now I've said many things in my life just to placate people in a bad emotional state to try to make them feel better. But this? Somehow, I actually, really believed it. But my rational mind knows that it's nowhere near guaranteed. Sure, trans people have always been around and that will continue to be the case no matter what, but there could still be even more unspeakable horrors coming for us very soon. The environment seems ripe for it. So why did I believe it? Why do I still? Well, it's kind of like believing that the Mariners will go to the World Series. See, I've had this thought banging around in my head for a while now: the Mariners are very queer-coded. By that I don't refer to how they play in a city with a famously vibrant queer community, though that certainly helps. I mean it mainly in terms of the fundamental dichotomy of their existence which Jon Bois described so brilliantly. On the one hand, in how they struggle. Flounder. Seem at times to have the very fabric of the universe pitted against them. Have to fight for their very survival. But on the other, the uncanny ability to produce flashes of almost unfathomable brilliance. Their first decade+ as the worst, most irrelevant team in baseball? Saved and made relevant by a decade of one of the top 5 greatest players of all time. Weighed down with a bad bullpen that could destroy their chances at any moment? Somehow also having the most fearsome and intimidating starting pitcher ever. A historic playoff drought following the most winningest regular season ever? Provided a bright spot in the form of one man rewriting the rules of the sport in every way imaginable, including coming from almost halfway around the world to do so. And now, Cal's 60 home run (as a catcher!!!) season and every other incredible thing we've been fortunate enough to witness the last few months, juxtaposed with this heartbreaking ending. Queer people wake up every day and face unimaginable cruelty. Our life stories frequently conclude in tragedy. Yet we also produce an outsized share of the greatest art and the greatest ideas that humanity is capable of. We have a fire burning in our hearts that can light the darkest of spaces. So I don't know about all of you, but in spite of it all, I still choose to believe. Queer people will survive. Trans people will thrive. The Mariners will go to the World Series.
