A favourite animal (story by @lauraskylark.bsky.social )

Her favourite animal in the world was the squirrel and colleagues and friends made use of that information a lot - she got birthday cakes with nuts - socks with tiny woollen squirrels, surprise squirrel postcards and all what they could come up with. She never got bored or fed up with her theme though. Some of her closest friends even made jokes she was secretly a squirrel - with her long elegant teeth, her love for brown raincoats and her reddish -brown curls. Her autumn and winter absences - explained with long stays in warmer areas and workcations with only her laptop and the tropic sea…. also established the impression she did a kind of winter rest - as colleagues and friends missed her happy squirrely personality in the colder part of the year.

It was time again - October soon came to a close - the shops were decorated with pumpkins, ghouls and ghosts, the streets smelled like pumpkin spice and rain, she had booked her flights. Her pretence flights which she actually never did board.

She walked through the park to her favourite gnarly oak tree. A beauty of 200 years with a rich treasure of acorns and several tree hollows - high above the hustle and bustle of the park visitors. Right now she was alone - as she preferred it. She stripped naked - putting her clothes into a bag she put in a tree hollow just right for it and hid it with leaves. Then the shivering began. Not because of the cold - it was the usual procedure. Her last conscious thought was: “It is not too bad to turn into a were -squirrel for half a year!” Afterwards only soft thoughts came and went - thoughts of sleeping and warmth and snow and hiding places and rest. A comfort.
