Thompson stated she could not, “in good conscience”, approve the permit. "To approve the request would have meant a continued life in captivity and a return to public entertainment," Thompson said.

This past Wednesday, 10/3/2025, it was announced that Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans Minister, Joanne Thompson, denied Marineland Canada’s request for a permit to export 30 beluga whales to the notorious Chimelong Ocean Kingdom theme park in China.
