Though not the biggest fan of Occupy Democrats, they had given me the opportunity to publish my mea culpa that I was leaving MAGA, & acknowledging my mistake of supporting MAGA, Trump and my governor, Ron DeSantis. I never thought anyone would care that I left MAGA.

We'd recommend attending our online support group for friends and family of MAGA. If you'd like info, please direct message us.

Keep in mind that no one can get someone in MAGA to leave; the change must come from the individual.

You're right, and I shouldn't have made my post entirely about myself.

When I was in MAGA, I believed this about the Democratic Party—that Democrats were malignant communists and socialists, who embodied evil. After leaving MAGA, I came to realize how traumatic a life it is to dehumanize others.

Trump & MAGA exploit the fact that most people are trusting, and never think someone is willing to lie about most everything. This is partly why lies stick. I think many in MAGA know when they're spouting a lie; but they have crafted an identity that is based on lies, & it’s why so many espouse lies

I second this; was a great honor to finally meet you!

Had a beautiful conversation w/ Rick Logis @leavingmaga.bsky.social on my podcast. It’ll be up in a few days.

If you’ve lost family & friends to MAGA, I hope you’ll check it & his work out.

There is a path to healing.

Obama's desired change was to help shape government and institutions that were more responsive to the people they represented.

The question then becomes: what is each candidate's desired changes? Trump’s have always been to tear down the established political order; this was the primary reason I gravitated to his campaign.

It also took time for the Democratic Party to warm to Obama, just as is happening with Mamdani.
leavingmaga.bsky.social
And, both parties are generally afraid of change candidates. Obama, Trump, Bernie Sanders, Mamdani; not comparing Obama, Sanders and Mamdani to Trump, but recall that the GOP was against Trump even after he won many primaries.

I think many (most?) who vote tend to be enamored with "change" candidates; Obama and Trump were such candidates.

The upstream swim is trying to keep people from feeling that our divides are hopelessly permanent; I don’t believe they are.

This does not mean those in MAGA lack intelligence or integrity; it’s that any information that refutes the pervasively-held mythologies in MAGA is shunned and rejected. I know this because I lived an extreme MAGA life for more than half-a-decade.

The right, however, takes their disaffection and spins it as a conspiracy against them. Fact is, in MAGA, learning is not encouraged.

Also keep in mind that past traumas (political, economic, understandable feelings of being left behind and forgotten, etc.) make one susceptible to the propaganda of Trump and MAGA.

Liberals are somewhat responsible for the animosity MAGA voters hold toward them: “uneducated”; “flyover country”; etc.; these terms are not exactly endearing.

I spend a lot of time online. Online isn’t real life, and not representative of most people. Mis-/dis-information are like a water leak; it permeates itself everywhere, and causes damage in its wake.

Unpopular-with-some take: Liberals, to some extent, don’t make it easy to leave. (In fairness, however, lots of liberals would welcome those who leave. But the loudest who would never welcome those who leave are found—where else?—online.)

🧵One of the most significant hindrances to people leaving MAGA is the judgment from others; I understand why someone wanting to leave, or having doubts, wouldn’t, out of fear of ostracization.

I was wrong, but thought, at the time, that the 2 parties were the same.

The question then becomes: what are the desired changes of the candidate? Trump’s desired change has always been to tear down the established political order; this was the primary reason I gravitated to his campaign, as I thought it was what was needed in a duopoly.

Both parties are generally afraid of “change” candidates---Obama, Trump, Sanders, Mamdani; not comparing Obama, Sanders and Mamdani to Trump, but recall that the GOP was nearly as against Trump, at one time, as they were Hillary. Recall that it took time for Democrats to embrace Obama.

Many in MAGA do have a line of demarcation that, when crossed, will commence doubts about their support for Trump and MAGA. Don’t give up on your MAGA friends and family; those closest to me didn’t give up on me.

It took me an entire year to leave because I wrestled with the fact that most of what I sincerely believed was inaccurate and conspiratorial.
