Liberal Democrat MP for Newbury. Passionate about housing, the NHS, and supporting local communities.
The Government’s £5bn SEND deficit write-off sounds promising, but will it deliver real change? We’ve seen these headlines fall apart before. I’ll be watching closely to see if this Government actually delivers.

Apprenticeships are a vital driver of economic growth. It’s time they receive the recognition and investment they deserve to get more young people into rewarding, well-paid and skilled careers.

The Assisted Dying Bill has had extensive Commons scrutiny, with MPs coming to a final decision.

Lords’ revision is vital, but procedural tactics risk blocking the Bill entirely. On such a complex issue, the public rightly expect the elected House to have the final say.

6.8 million people are living in poverty in the UK.

JRF’s latest report shows why we need joined-up action, on social security, housing, and living costs, not piecemeal interventions.

Following several days of sustained and heavy rainfall in West Berkshire, I have written to Thames Water to ask what contingency plans are in place for further wet weather.

It is vital we don’t see a repeat of 2024.

After high levels of rainfall, I have written to Thames Water to ensure we avoid a repeat of the 2024 sewage failures.

How we treat animals says a lot about us.

Strong protections, high welfare standards, and bold support for organisations on the frontline are essential so animals can live a better life.

Long waits for children’s mental health support are failing families across Newbury and West Berkshire.

A local constituent has launched a national petition calling for an inquiry into CAMHS delays — now over 30,000 signatures.

This cannot continue.

Community pharmacies save millions of GP appointments and are often the first point of healthcare in rural areas.

Yet, underfunding, medicine shortages, and staff pressures are pushing them to the brink. We need to back them properly.

The consultation on Earned Settlement is open until 12 Feb. If you’re on the pathway to Settled Status, make sure your voice is heard. This is your chance to influence key reforms.

This week marks the national Mind Your Head campaign, shining a light on mental health and suicide prevention in farming. I’m proud to support this vital message.

Banning smartphones in schools without taking action against the social media platforms themselves is not enough. Parents and children deserve real protection against the harms of addictive algorithms, and they shouldn’t be left to manage the risks alone.

I’ve signed the Good Business Decision Makers’ Pledge because how decisions are made matters - for workers, communities, and the long-term health of our economy.
Good business isn’t just about profit.

SEND support should be consistent, not a postcode lottery.

Following Dingley’s Promise roundtable, I’ve spoken with the Minister for Early Education and written to push for inclusive, system-wide reforms.

Last week, I met with VodafoneThree to discuss their 5G rollout plans for the constituency over the next five years.

Ensuring everyone has access to fast, reliable mobile signal is a key priority, and I will keep pushing to make sure that no one is left behind.

Freezing student loan repayment thresholds is a stealth tax on graduates.

If left frozen until 2031, repayments will effectively start at minimum wage, trapping young people in decades of debt.

This system is not fair. It needs reform.

Challenged FirstPort in the HCLG committee earlier this week over soaring service charges and delayed repairs, including a Newbury lift left broken for 22 months. Leaseholders deserve transparency and better service.

We need stronger protections and a proper regulator.

On World Cancer Day, it’s a moment for both optimism and realism.

Cancer death rates have fallen by 22% over 50 years, but cases are going up.

We’re on the brink of key breakthroughs: the next decade must focus on screening and world class research so more lives are saved.

I’ve tabled an amendment to the Railways Bill to ensure high-delay crossings like ours are reviewed & long-term solutions considered.

Resigning Labour Party membership is not enough.
The Epstein files raise serious questions about Peter Mandelson’s conduct in public office.
The Government must now bring forward legislation to strip him of his peerage, and the police should investigate.

Years of campaigning, a clear Ombudsman ruling, but still no compensation for WASPI women.

After a shambolic process, the Government’s decision is a bitter blow for millions.

For decades, private water companies have underinvested in our water network. Expecting households to foot the bill for their failures is unacceptable.

The LibDems are calling for this price hike to be scrapped. It’s time these companies are held accountable.
