To drink from the Well of Wisdom, the Norse god Odin had to give up one of his eyes to Mimir, the Well's guardian. In some versions, this is simply a sacrifice, but in others it's a trade - the eye gives Mimir access to Odin's knowledge just as the drink gives Odin access to Mimir's.

In Greek mythology, the Stymphalian birds were man-eating birds who lived in a swamp in Stymphalia. They were feared for their bronze beaks, sharp bronze feathers they could launch at their victims, and poisonous dung. Heracles killed the birds for his Sixth Labour.
