I agree it's spookily good. My main issue is the lack of transparency, accountability, consistency, reliability of AI ... & the idea that humans can just 'do a quick check/edit' doesn't work without the hard graft of detailed corpus research behind that checking ... which takes time/expertise.

Well, yes, BUT ... and the 'but' is too long to go into here but it may end up as a blog post ... watch this space ...

TFW, you've had a slightly frustrating disrupted week jumping around between bitty bits of work & feeling unproductive, so you settle down to do some nice, straightforward #lexicography & the next word on your list is "waggle" 😊

⌛2 weeks till the deadline for proposals for the 2025 AS Hornby Dictionary Research Awards (ASHDRA) on 30 April.

You've still got time to get together a proposal for a research project related to #dictionaries in #ELT

Honestly, I sometimes think #lexicography work should come with counselling. I just had to do a corpus search for the phrase "vomit sth up" ... it was pretty nasty ...

Today, I'm joining @societyofauthors.bsky.social protesting against the use of pirated works by Meta to train their AI models.

According to LibGen, 8 of my books have been stolen without permission or compensation. This is illegal - it's plain and simple theft.

TFW, you type "emphathize" and know it looks wrong, but can't quite work out why 🤣

A frustrating #StetWalk this morning, took my glass bottle to the deli to get a milk refill ... only to find they'd run out. Had to resort to plastic milk from the supermarket but then argued with the self-checkout about the empty glass bottle in my shopping bag!
At least there were magnolias ...

Cold, but blue skies and waving daffs outside Bristol Cathedral on a morning #StetWalk to meet a pal for coffee

You only have to cross one country to get from Norway to North Korea.

TFW, you're writing something about usage labels in dictionaries and find yourself looking up examples of words in a whole bunch of dictionaries (on and offline) to see how they label them ... then realize your search history's going to look really dodgy #lexicographylife

I think this may be a British thing ... we tend to use 'girlfriend' to (almost exclusively) describe a romantic partner, not just a friend who happens to be female (and WAG is a BrE term)

I just went to find the link to join this and realized I registered but was never sent a link 😕 Hope it goes/went well anyway.

I'd like to tune in online, but the link takes me to what looks like a ticket for the in-person event. Do I guess that if I sign up, I'll get sent the online link anyway?

Still grey and pain-aggravatingly cold out there, so just a short #StetWalk to admire the hellebores in Royal Fort Gardens

Not new, but "transactional" could be having a bit of a moment ... (trend from English Trends corpus, 2014-now)

Lexicographic catch of the day: I just very nearly uploaded a new entry with a typo in the headword ... 'pickled pink' instead of 'tickled pink' 🤣
