A true icon. John was Britain’s – and perhaps the world’s – first openly gay high-profile athlete. He came out during the 1976 World Championships in Gothenburg, which he went on to win. John left a lasting impact on our community and countless others. Today, we remember him.

As we and others have previously reported, and as the Observer reported on Sunday, hundreds of millions of US dollars are currently being pumped into the UK from the Trump-aligned anti-rights movement, who are specifically aiming to reverse decades of progress.

This is the latest in a long line of recent attacks on LGBT rights and from conservative Christian nationalists. It follows on from recent moves by Reform UK councillors in Northamptonshire to ban Pride flags on council buildings.

The law should protect victims, not enable abusive fundamentalists – with wealthy American backers – who believe in demonic possession! We’ve been campaigning on this for 45+ years. Theresa May promised a ban in 2018. Four Prime Ministers later, and we’re still campaigning!

'Conversion therapy' is nothing but hatred disguised as compassion. Each day it remains legal is another day someone in a high-control religious organisation is tortured. Beatings, forced prayer, and 'exorcisms' must be illegal. End this abuse. #BanConversiontherapy.

We’ve been campaigning on this issue for 45+ years. In 2018, under Theresa May’s Government, it looked like progress was finally within reach. Four Prime Ministers later, we’re still waiting.

The majority of LGBT people are non-religious, and very few religious groups offer same-sex marriages. Humanist celebrants always have – and always will. Many LGBT couples want a fully recognised humanist wedding. It's time they were given that right.

Alan Turing, one of Britain’s most renowned humanists, was a visionary whose genius helped the Allies win WWII. Yet despite his extraordinary contributions, he was subjected to chemical castration by the British state in 1952. This #PrideMonth, we remember him. He was born #OnThisDay 1912.

The idea that acknowledging the existence of gay people will somehow 'turn' children gay is not only ignorant – it’s laughable. If that were true, every gay person would have ended up straight. Representation doesn’t convert anyone. It just makes it safer for people to be who they already are.
lgbthumanists.bsky.social
Growing up gay means being surrounded by heteronormative ideas from every direction. We’re taught from the earliest age that boys marry girls, that love looks a certain way, that families follow a single pattern. And yet, despite all of that, we still come out gay.

Involving young children in Nursery and Years 1 and 2 in a mock ‘Christian wedding’ offers no educational value.
If genuine, however, this letter highlights the lengths to which some faith schools will go to immerse children in religious practices and church life.

Dear parents,

I would like to share some good news with you!

We have decided to hold a Christian 'Mock wedding' for all of our children in Early Years (Reception and full-time Nursey), Year 1 and Year 2. It is an even that we have coordinated every few years, so that the children have an insight into a church building, with a special event to mark and be a part of. The event will take place on X. The local vicar, Rev. Shirley, is going to provide a role-play of the a wedding service, where all the children with participate, singing songs, and learning about some of the key aspects of the service. I would like to invite all of the children to dress up in their most formal/party outfits, as if they were attending a real wedding. Please note that you DO NOT need to purchase anything new for the event - something that they would usually wear to a party will suffice. WE will arrange for some pupils to carry flowers from each class - pupuils will be randomly selected to take some of the lead roles within th service, such as bride, groom, best man, bridesmaids and so on. You will see attatched the details regarding these arangements. There will be a bride and groom selected from each of the classes; so it's goin to be a big event or the children. Follow the service, we will retyurn to school for a wedding party, with speeches and dancing.

For many, coming out also means confronting the beliefs they were raised with – not by choice, but because their religion refuses to accept who they truly are. So many of our members come to us through @faith2faithless.bsky.social.

#OnThisDay 1999, a neo-Nazi nail bombed the Admiral Duncan pub in Soho deliberately targeted London's LGBT community. The explosion killed Andrea Dykes, John Light, and Nik Moore, and injured over 70 more. Today, we honour their memory, and stand united against hate, always.
