Our world is in a very difficult place today. But to be successful in our fight against the forces of destruction and self-destruction - we need a strong, better UN - that we shape together.

We see an erosion across the world of Charter rules governing the use of force. Mitigating the consequences of conflict should not distract us from our central task: to prevent and end war. The ICC's jurisdiction over the crime of aggression is thus vital to upholding the UN Charter.

The International Criminal Court is an equally important institution. Its central statement is uniquely important for the rule of law: nobody is above the law. The Court is under significant political attack and targeted by sanctions. We must stand up to protect it.

The Rule of Law is at the guiding principle of LI's work at the UN. LI strongly supports the ICJ, and we are pleased to see attention brought to it in recent years - notably, the Advisory Opinion on Climate Change, agreed by consensus, which LI helped draft the GA resolution mandating.

The continued existence of the UN is at stake. The "UN80" process is our chance to make this organization fit for purpose. At the forefront, it must fulfill its promise as a peace organization - through action, in the Security Council or through the GA's peace and security powers under the Charter.

We face new and daunting challenges. Climate Change and AI progress without sufficient agreement on common rules. While we face important regional challenges - foremost among them the European security architecture - we must embed these in a larger vision. The place to do that is here, at the UN.

The UN is Liechtenstein's window on the world. It has been instrumental in domestic efforts toward progress. We feel a special bond with all States that are small in size, but no in ambition and vision. We need this organization, and we must join together to safeguard our common interest in it.

In Ukraine, the aggressor has vetoed collective action. In Gaza, we have become bystanders. The people of Sudan see indifference from our political bodies. Rather than address this credibility deficit, we see new challenges to the foundations of the UN and of multilateralism.

The UN is at a landmark moment. For 80 years, it has brought nations together to develop international law, codify human rights, and agree on common development goals. But political paralysis has too often prevented the UN from fulfilling the purposes and principles laid out in its Charter.
