Mildly Trumpy vocabulary of paternalistic affection there. Surprised he didn't squeeze in a "cherish"

But where on the (quite short) Herts/Cambs border? Cambs side, so there's a fairly limited number of places it can be

Let’s be real: approximately ten seconds after you told Tolkien that Catholics couldn’t go to Mass because they were afraid of being disappeared by agents of the government, he’d be out there protesting.

GMT (UTC) crew assemble!
So, I am going to hoist my unpopular opinion: hooray for Greenwich Mean Time!

Hooray for dawn before 7 am! OK, so the evening will be dark, but it's supposed to be. Nights are dark, mornings are supposed to be light.

I'm not even a very early riser but give me a dark cosy afternoon over not seeing the sun until 9am every time...

It must have been when BST was pretty new, and I imagine there were such cases... I am firmly of your mind on the clocks going back btw, and am always surprised to discover people who have lived in Scotland who *aren't*!

There's a lovely skit about this in an E.F. Benson novel, about an old don who simply refuses to recognise BST saying "the time that won Trafalgar is good enough for me" and citing the absurdity of it not being noon when the sun is at its height and it being Benson everyone just works around him

This is fully a little treat belief, I am careful to have cavalorn-level scepticism about mythological woo every other respect, I am not taking questions

Most of these are just mildly spicy but fully defensible opinions, so here's mine: Bertilak and his European analogues are manifestations of Al-Khidr, not in a syncretic mythology way but in a "the green fella was coming over the sea to fuck with the folk at the edge of the world" way
Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

I think the less temperate threads of eg FFA are pretty much full of what the article describes as wank, which is also often fandom wank

To *ensure* otters, you need to get a current Royal Bank of Scotland £10. (Scottish bank notes are kinda interesting, they're issued by three different retail banks, not by a central bank, and the withdrawal of old notes follows a different procedure from English ones too.)

The art gallery in Aberdeen is good. As a Child Ballads fan I always liked to go out to Fyvie (Andrew Lammie - there is a grave in the churchyard reported to be that of the ill-fated Bonnie Annie)

Thank you, interesting to know. I seem to remember the conservatism of building societies being an issue for my parents in buying their house (wreck) in 1983

I've had this argument with my mum more times than I care to mention! That said, I'm a bit sceptical about someone in 1985 easily being able to borrow 4.2x their salary and get a 95% mortgage... doesn't alter the basic principle, but I think max 3x salary and min 10% deposit were the norm then
