I also am enjoying Post Racial Resistance: Black Women, Media, and Uses of Ambiguity by Ralina Joseph it is helpful for understanding racism in the media exposing the success of gender conformity for soothing bad media, ie hair dramatically impacting a woman being perceived as radical vs acceptable
