it'll be interesting to see what they do for a dragon ball movie, if that's really what the january announcement is. toriyama reworked a lot of battle of gods' story and character designs, especially beerus and super saiyan god goku. without his input now, it's anyone's guess where they'll take it.
it feels kind of strange that we never really got to see much of freeza’s origins before he took over planet vegeta. we’ve seen the backstories of most of the main cast, with the most recent being the glinds and namekians in daima. i just think it’d be pretty interesting.
zamasu should've been a redeemable character. we've already seen a version of him fall, so it would've been much more interesting to have him turn against goku black and realize the error of his ways. there was a brief moment of conflict between them in the manga, but nothing ever came of it.
i’ve always wondered why the violence is so toned down in modern dragon ball. i’ve heard people mention a law in japan restricting excessive violence during the timeslot super aired in, but it’s strange since one piece airs right after and doesn’t seem affected by those same rules.
i’ll never understand the power scaling in this part of the story. gohan suddenly isn’t sure he can even go super saiyan, piccolo’s getting pushed back by a guy on zarbon’s level, and krillin’s scared of freeza’s soldiers while roshi’s casually taking down hundreds. it just doesn’t add up.
this arc would've been a lot better if we actually got to spend time getting to know the other universes/fighters beforehand. maybe each universe could’ve had its own dedicated arc? also, the tournament could’ve been made more engaging like how naruto had three distinct phases in the chunin exams.
it’s funny how most of the fighting in dragon ball gt just devolves into using ki blasts. once you notice it, you can’t unsee it.
i reeeally dislike trunks’ hair color change in super. we all know why it’s blue, but i’m not gonna lie the change is so jarring. it actually takes me out of the show because of how distracting it is. i didn’t even know that was possible lol.
i remember when funimation finished releasing the dragon boxes for z, they put out a survey asking fans which set they should do next: the movies, gt, or dragon ball. it’s been about fifteen years since then, and we still haven’t heard a thing. i wonder what happened.
it's wild, especially when you consider how the world fell into chaos after aang disappeared during the hundred year war. you'd think people would be more appreciative and even eager to have the avatar involved in keeping the world safe.
i started rewatching the legend of korra recently, and it's honestly jarring how overprotective the world is toward her. almost every step of the way, there's someone trying to stop her from doing her literal job.
apparently, they just didn’t really know what they were doing. honestly, this franchise feels cursed with bad production planning lol.
i could've sworn there was an interview a few years back with a producer or someone high up who worked on gt, where they said they dropped the whole dragon ball space search idea and decided to shift the series to be more action focused, like z.
growing up, i remember dragon ball gt being advertised way more than dragon ball z in the early to mid-2000s. you couldn't escape that logo, lol. i used to see tons of gt dvds at zellers, which was basically the canadian version of target.
it's pretty disappointing to be introduced to the brothers of the most important members of your main cast and have them not really amount to anything. at least with raditz, his debut was strong, but i can't say the same for tarble, unfortunately.
toriyama mentioned black can turn into a super saiyan. toei left it out of the anime while toyotaro included it in the manga. apparently, he writes notes, and both the anime and manga decide how to use them. it probably won't ever happen, but it'd be cool to see his original outlines for each arc.
this is probably my favorite moment from the dragon ball super manga. it really feels like toyotaro thought about how toriyama would have approached this scene. everything is structured so beautifully. i wish we had more moments like this.
for such a short series, daima gave us a lot of interesting new lore. it's disappointing when new dragon ball lore gets introduced without being explored more in depth, like with zalama, the creator of the super dragon balls, and yamoshi, the original super saiyan god.
y'know, it puzzles me how underwhelming the trailers were for this movie, considering how many incredible looking shots there are. it's like they either put entire spoilers in the trailers or include absolutely nothing to get people excited. like there's no in-between, lol.
say what you will about his animation, but tadayoshi yamamuro's raw pencil sketches are a beautiful sight. i know katsuyoshi nakatsuru had a stint drawing some manga for akira toriyama's other works like dr. slump and even cashman, but i'd love to see how yamamuro would approach drawing manga.
i think cashman is my favorite of toriyama's non-dragon ball works.
three months is crazy lol. apparently, daima wasn’t even the big project they were working on. it just happened to line up with the 40th anniversary. whatever iyoku’s cooking must be big. we’re definitely in a good place now.
very true. they had every opportunity to go back and fix all the issues with resurrection f, but they just ctrl+c and ctrl+v’d the movie into the anime. that’s what i’m worried about more than anything. times have changed, so maybe i should have some hope in them.
it’s really starting to feel like 2015 again with all these new dragon ball updates. i’m so here for it.
