Familial corpses within encased glass, moving coffins around in the dark, scrabbling out of a crypt???
I had to keep reading.

love the way his hairy back becomes something that she can focus on, and direct her thoughts towards.

#Rachelcusktogether 'He didn't once glance back at me, for people are at their least aware of others when demonstrating their own power over them.' Her piercing awareness. Also great how she turns herself into his next anecdote, narrated by whom?

I’ve thought about “airing the shaded crevices of his being” a lot over the past few days. There are some special, almost sacred, experiences that seem to fall into this space … an electric sunset, an unexpected meeting of gaze, a portentous silence freighted with meaning. This is powerful to me.

I love this. She takes this seemingly obvious, heavy-handed metaphor and makes it brilliant, ironic. Flips it on Ryan - his symbol of change becomes a symbol of Sisyphian stagnation.

i've gotten so much better at listening in my 50s, i have to say. though sometimes, I cannot stand certain pontificating or aggressive voices.

yeah, this definition only works if you haven't outlived your family. for me, home is where I precisely can't control how I feel.

I loved that juxtaposition so much, and the movement up the stairs away from the cafe.

I kind of love how we get a slightly negative description of the plane neighbor's body almost out of nowhere. It reminds me of how often I read female bodily descriptions out of nowhere in novels by men.

Energy - and (self) control? Is listening a way of manipulating? Wondering about this as I read these scenes where men seem to empty themselves. Fascinating how we women can do this.

yes, there's something to that child-like impulse that many of us move beyond as adults, but we still retain some remnant.

Day 10, Oct 10, Fri - START CH4 p58 “My neighbour from the plane was a good foot shorter…” to p65 “…other than that her work was everything to her.”

"And in fact it was obvious, from certain features in her apartment, that she regarded writing as a profession worthy of the greatest trust & respect.
. . .
The room itself was quite small & dark. Yet there was nothing you really needed that wasn't there."
