Just noticed @morton.bsky.social ‘s work signature includes: “Are you ill or stuck fast in the depths of political economy? — Friedrich Engels to Karl Marx (1863)”. Friend, I really don’t know anymore.

"Readers will no doubt see the irony in a cash-strapped organisation paying an independent consultant for three months to provide strategies for financial viability, only to ignore the findings on the grounds of financial viability."
Who killed Meanjin?
And why won’t Melbourne University Publishing engage with efforts to save it?

Pleased to see the widespread outcry - Meanjin is an important publication. I was so happy they published my piece about the West Gate Bridge disaster and the workers who were killed, based on my research with Sarah Gregson. Read it here or DM me for access: meanjin.com.au/essays/mud/

Happy 25th anniversary of the s11 protests to everyone who helped build the blockade that shut down the World Economic Forum in Melbourne on September 11 & 12 2000 🚩🚩🚩

Opps, it is on Monday and for some reason is twice in my diary...as we were.

It is a great chapter, will report back on the discussion...

I'm just about to go to our working class environmentalism reading group, and on the agenda today is @nhold.bsky.social!

As Crealy says: UTS is a public university with a legislated obligation to “meet the needs of the community”. Its charter clearly states that the university exists for the public good. If preparing teachers for New South Wales schools during an ongoing teacher shortage isn’t a public good, what is?
lizhumphrys.bsky.social
I often miss working for the NSW Ombudsman, where the guiding principle in my day to day work was 'what is the public interest here', in whatever complaint I was looking at.
lizhumphrys.bsky.social
As Crealy argues, 'when we strip away specialist programs like Tesol, adult literacy and numeracy and EAL/D, we deepen inequality, leaving the most vulnerable students further behind'. The same can be said of UTS's public health programs, and the plan to axe them.

It makes clear something I try to teach our students in Global Economies: what data is it important to consider, how to we situate that information in a wider social context, and who wins and loses out of a particular way of tackling a problem.
lizhumphrys.bsky.social
Earlier this week I heard it stated that the senior management / decision makers were not interested in arguments about the social necessity of keeping certain programs (with the persona calling such arguments rhetoric).
lizhumphrys.bsky.social
As a university that has goals of internationalism and social justice embedded in its strategic plans and policy, everywhere you turn, it honestly beggars belief that such a move could be made.
lizhumphrys.bsky.social
Strap in - longer thread. Wide reaching plans to decimate courses and sack staff at my university (@utsengage.bsky.social) are underway. Some of the key programs that the University wants to scrap are those in public health, education (teacher training), and international studies.
