Quick tutorial on how I draw 'ground' that might be useful!
"This is just my method* born out of pure hatred for perspective grids and impatience during the layout process. There are more ~professional~ ways to goabout this, but my way works for me.The way the ‘ground’ looks is pretty important in many caseswhen trying to achieve depth. Now it doesn’t always have tobe like literal dirt, it could be snow, clouds, an ocean or waterfall - whatever it is if it receeds in space and takes up a good chunk of your piece I find the eye looks to it as a cue for where you are in a space" "*Calling this a method seems like a gross overstatement, but I’veused the same simple steps in these pieces and the original sketchesfor them were pretty bare bones" "Having a large brush arsenal is important. Have lots of different shapes and textures at your disposal, you never knowwhat might come in handy with a simple change in scale or brush setting to make your painting process faster.I start with a base color and before doing anything I might add a gradient to mimic the lightening as things receed (duringthe day) or I’ll add some variation with a soft brush to sit under my textures. For this dirty/sand I take a spatter brush and go to town. Here I set it to multiply to get quick color variation." "Next step is just skew it to fit thedesired perspective you are going for. For most of my baseballillustrations I am usually just flattening and stretching like theexample below.Everything after that is layering.scale up the same texture, loweropacity, erase away, add colorvariations - I just do it till it looks...like dirt I guess." "Real quickly I added in gravel example, but the versatility of just grabbing things and skewing them +paintover is pretty endless. If you warp your brush strokes you can make waves in water and I’ve alsomade cloud layers in this way. I want to complete colored references for the other outfit variants of Quill! I've been allowing Quill's character model to shift slightly depending on what I want to emphasize about her outfit such as here where she has prominently more defined legs rather than rubber-hose legs. 🎉
