My children's book on USGS research in the Gulf of Alaska is finished and uploaded! The story is heavily influenced by research on climate anxiety in children. Go check it out, it's free through the Alaska Climate Adaptation Science Center. Share it with any curious kids!

It is human trafficking.
Totally agree with this. Flying a person to a third country that they may never have been to, directly into a prison where they are going to be forced to do hard labor, is not a deportation; it's something else entirely.
@washingtonpost.com They were not DEPORTED. Deported means sending them back to their country of origin. These people were sent to a maximum security prison in El Salvador, without any due process or any analysis as to whether they feared harm in El Salvador!

When I get extra stressed, I use more paper towels than I should. And I am in effect, sucking life out of the trees and giving it back to myself. Sorry.

Check out this project amplifying science stories amidst recent federal firings. This is the first of many to come, so check back in to see what these impressive people are fighting for. And if you know of anyone with a story to tell, they can share through the linked page.
Our first scientist feature is out as part of our effort to highlight the importance of the work of #firedfed scientists!
This features Kelsey Hopland, PhD, illustrated by Lia Ferguson! #sciart
Please enjoy and share. If you want to contribute, learn more:

A campaign to match scientists who've been unjustly fired from federal positions with illustrators to tell their stories — this looks pretty neat

In Tlingit, the word for yarn (kakéin) sounds a lot like the word for a certain very addictive substance, and i think if youʼve ever been into fiber arts, that information may resonate with you.

Earth system models show that strong emissions reductions can save some of the world’s permafrost and keep all of its ancient carbon safely locked in frozen ground. As we are intentionally overwhelmed by news, do not forget the power of the Arctic. It will control the climate future for us all.

Language is important. Don't let anyone tell you its just language; it's just three words. The UA BOR is hiding behind this excuse, but they know full well the implications of their decision. Programs, positions, admissions are all at risk. #UniversityofAlaska

Bartleby-ing could be an option. You've been told to fire someone? "I would prefer not to." You've been told you've been fired? Sit on the steps indefinitely.

Probationary park employees ousted amid hiring freeze, leaving Denali in limbo
Caught in the crosshairs of firings and freezes are longtime employees who recently received promotions. Despite their longevity, they lost their jobs as well because of their probationary status.

I compared 22 identical climate-related posts on Threads vs Bluesky over the last 3 months, and the difference is shocking.
Normalized engagement on Threads dropped nearly 2/3 + my following dropped, while Bluesky engagement held steady + following quadrupled.

There are falcons in two of my favorite poems, so here's a picture to remind you of a falcon to remind you of both awe and fear.
"I caught this morning morning's minion, kindgdom of daylight's dauphin"
"Turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer"

Ok, so how are grants evaluated? What's it mean to say we "peer review" a grant?
The way it's talked about can make it seem like there's a kind of cronyism involved, but that's not true.

Having looked at what the public gets out of federal funding of science, let's talk about costs.
The grant linked here is fairly cheap so far as grants go, costing $243,553.00 over two years.
Of that, we only received about $161,000 of that for research.
Let's talk about why and what that means.

Since we're about two months out from having all kinds of anti-government funded science bullshit showing up, let's talk a little bit about NSF Grants, using mine that just finished up as an example.
Starting with what the public gets out of it.
