I've been waiting for over a year to be at the garden 🌿 Please submit to our village, we'd love to have you! ✨

Personally excited for environmental/transportation privacy/cryptography 💐 cross-border data flows and identity 🚌 landscape analyses of privacy frameworks/laws (e.g. 2020s v. 1980-2000s) 🌍

Taylor Swift fans having a coherent orderly exit from Twitter based on their values and interests not being respected is exhibiting more personal dignity and organizing power than any actual group of elected officials right now lol
well... if the swifties come here, i'm back 😭
Straight from the tortured poets department! Two corrections made and added the meta challenge. Who knows what else I might throw into the @cryptovillage.bsky.social #BSidesSF zine challenge prize pool~I haven't decided yet ✨
Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me? @cryptovillage.bsky.social survived day 1 at #BSidesSF thanks to our hoard of incredible volunteers, thanks everyone!

Working on the puzzles zine? Reach out (via Signal, old Slack, Twitter) to join the CPV Discord for hints & support! Meta puzzle dropping tonight ✨
Do you have cute stories about privacy and cryptography conflicting? Have thoughts about ML/AI and the state of the field today? See potential systemic privacy issues in fields such as education, prisons, bureaucratic institutions and have ideas on how to tackle them?

Please submit to our CFP!

More news: so long, London (we've moved to Discord)!

We've been transitioning from Slack throughout the year after reviewing both platforms. We hope to keep people connected year-around.

Invites will first roll out to volunteers and speakers, see you all soon ✨

Hot take about time - we should have diagonal timezones since earth rotates on an incline
shoutout to my paramedics yesterday for being very delightful and the first to give me an early hbd 😂😤🐰💙✨
at some point i should make a tier chart on generic epipens 😌✨
I’ve asked them for precisely that information at this point due to this. I’ve spoken to other students and TAs who felt Turnitin (and their EULA “agreement”) was coercive but felt they could not opt out because of its use in mandatory courses.

This is before personal issues they experienced!
you are a lifesaver i did not realise there was no threading here omggg 😭
Hope I have a positive update in the future! Very disappointing I was not informed, had a Turnitin account created without my authorisation including transfers of my PII and Creative Works before I came across a EULA I can't even decline (your EULA is broken, Turnitin).

✨ Privacy is a right ✨
(For the English department). So, I guess it’s a great day to not be an English major. Most students consent have been compromised for req. courses to graduate however, handing over a “non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable license” that survives termination of the EULA.
I dropped my English courses due to varying issues with Turnitin, their EULA, my ethics and values.

It's baffling that English professors, authors, academics hate AI infiltrating their spaces. Yet the English department forces students to systemically give up their Creative Works to fuel the cycle.
Well, this has become a joyous rollercoaster of an adventure! It turns out this *specific* English course was simply the first course to prompt the Turnitin EULA to me, the student: they already use it in the backend at all times!

Surprise, my privacy rights, my rights to my Creative Works…? 🫠🥹
Didn't realise Bsky doesn't have threading, made a thread which ends here! (I can't upload photos from my phone so I don't post oops).

Learning a lot about academia first-hand fast 🫠
I’m just astonished English department fears of AI plagiarism are so strong they won’t take accommodations like:
- Researching and writing all Creative Works in-person, supervised, in an office or testing centre with no technologies (paper thesaurus!)
- Using Blue Books
- Document Versions

Loss of trust in educators and institutions of learning is more important though.

How do you educate while systemically (and verbally) stereotyping students, policing them with the presumption of “guilt” from the onset at all times? You can’t be vulnerable with a cop, and one who’s wrong a lot.

So it turns out, if you try to opt-out of the Turnitin EULA by selecting "Disagree": nothing happens!

Love being sent into a void of privacy and policy awaiting my fate as I don't authorise my papers being shipped off to Turnitin 🫠 (Recommendations navigating this in academia are welcome!)
