I know it’s long but I saw some bad takes about minors in fandom recently so here’s my thoughts. I know some of my opinions may be unpopular but I stand by this 100%
I see the "should minors be allowed be cosplay from so-and-so" discourse go around again and here's my unpopular opinion: you're not protecting kids by telling them who they can and can't cosplay. You can say it with the best intentions but it really feels like victim-blaming. You can take all the precaution in the world and still be creeped on. It's quite literally the "well what was she wearing?" question that people use to discredit victims. Obviously I understand that it makes many adults uncomfortable when minors cosplays from media rated 18+ but it's quite literally not the job of random internet strangers to tell people what to wear. It makes me uncomfortable if I see a ten-year-old dressed up as an overtly sexualized character. But that's on the parents. There's absolutely places where it's totally fair to say "this space is for adults only" but in real life it doesn't work that way. Cons are family-friendly. Social media allows people 13 and up. There's also the weird gray area of "18+ but actually people only have issues with sexual content and nothing else." No one seems to an issue with kids dressing up as horror icons or violent characters. So the blanket statement of "no minors cosplaying 18+ rated media" just doesn't work. It should be reframed as "minors should not be sexualizing themselves online or in con spaces" and EVEN STILL the blame should be on the creeps being inappropriate towards them. Don't get me wrong, safety is extremely important. My but if someone is going to commit a crime they will do it anyway. We should be putting this energy into shunning creeps from cons and the community in general, teaching about internet safety, and providing resources and safe spaces for for cosplayers of all ages. Cont.>> I'm just so tired of these victim-blaming statements while not doing any else to actually protect young cosplayers other than "just don't wear that." It's so disingenuous. Also the people who say "minors are the issue because ! can't say sexual things to them" HEY ABOUT WE DONT GO UP TO STRANGERS AND SEXUALIZE THEM IN GENERAL? And people who say "well I didn't know it was a minor." Or "1 don't want to accidently talk to a minor." HOW ABOUT WE NOT BE CREEPY OR INAPPROPRIATE TOWARDS STRANGERS IN GENERAL? Why are these questions used as defenses for this arguement when they should be things that should apply to everyone???? If you seriously have an issue with just having a normal conversation with a child then I'm incredibly concerned about your intentions. You are going to have to interact with children in your everyday life. That's just how life works. That's why there are specific 18+ spaces. But general admission cons and social media as a whole are not the spaces, and it's not your place to police others. Cont. >> Yes I cosplay from 18+ media. Yes I cosplay sexual characters. But I am a normal fucking human being first and foremost, and that means looking for others comes way before whatever you or me are cosplaying. I never want to be someone that people are afraid to approach because certain cosplays make me uncomfortable. It's not my place to judge, and if you are in a weird spot or someone is being creepy towards you regardless of age on social media or at a con, please please know that I will do my best to help. (But also please don't be parasocial!) TDLR If you actually want to protect minors in the cosplay community, then you need to be looking out for them by calling out the gross behavior of creeps, not shaming them for thier outfits. Shaming does nothing but push them towards the ones who want to take advantage of them. That doesn't mean you can't set boundaries, but making blanket statements to the internet as a whole is stupid. There's so much nuance here and I would much rather be known as a safe space then someone who is horrified if a child even looks in my direction. Also just like, be respectful of other people. Don't harass people. Don't be a creep. Don't talk to someone if they don't want to talk to you. Ask people their ages and proof if you're making advances, making adult-oriented content, or just hanging out with people you don't know well. And this goes for minors too, be respectful. If people don't want to interact dont take offense. Don't try to get into spaces that want to be adult only. But also please look out for creepy behavior and don't let your guard down. Have a trusted adult as someone to turn to. Block weirdos online.
