An oil painting of an eagle and a dog i. A boat. The poem continues: “No harm comes from tooth or beak, Our friendship is quite unique. We're a shining example of how kin, May each wear a very different skin.” More travellers in the SS Malarkey sailing across the Sea of Shenanigans as I spend this month exploring the theme of the beautiful pea-green boat. As the poem says, we may each wear a very different skin​ and yet we are still in the same boat, on the same sea, in the same world. There was a heart-melting story of this very thing on the Oregon coast last week. A juvenile humpback whale was beached in a tangle of crab pot line. Humans gathered in droves in the dark, the cold, the waves and the sand and pushed, pulled, comforted, and encouraged the whale. All night, all the next day, and more nights and days following. They did not hesitate to risk their own comfort and safety to help this beings who was so different from themselves Veterinarians administered vitamins, hydration and valium to support the whale. Experts and volunteers worked together in a herculean effort to save it, with the whale blowing and making sounds throughout. With each report and video, I cried. I admit to being teary as I write these words. The people's heroic efforts ultimately failed to save the giant, and local tribes appeared on site afterward to reverently handle the remains. I like to think those final days for the whale were as good as they could have been, in the hands of loving, determined and compassionate humans. And for me personally, this story of helping someone who wears a very different skin touched me to the core.

Today in war ravaged Portland, a lone protestor clad in black recited a litany of woes…he was relentless and determined, raising his voice over the city soundscape to be sure he was heard.

It is like music to visit the orchard, to find the vole sucking the sweet of the apple, or the rabbit with his fast-beating heart. Death itself is a music. Nobody has ever come close to writing it down, awake or in a dream. It cannot be told. It is flesh and bones changing shape and with good cause, mercy is a little child beside such an invention. It is music to wander the black back roads outside of town no one awake or wondering if anything miraculous is ever going to happen, totally dumb to the fact of every moment's miracle. Don't think I haven't peeked into windows. I see you in all your seasons making love, arguing, talking about God as if he were an idea instead of the grass, instead of the stars, the rabbit caught in one good teeth-whacking hit and brought home to the den. What I am, and I know it, is responsible, joyful, thankful. I would not give my life for a thousand of yours.”

Another one bites the dust heh heh…

Sometimes the paintings are just obliterated. With this one, I have an abstracted landscape composition in mind, so I put down the underpainting of the new composition. Once this dries I’ll begin the layers of the new piece.

Once a year, I am ruthless with the art. Selling it at ridiculous prices and painting over much of what remains. It keeps me from becoming complacent, from feeling precious about the art and from stagnation.

And so it begins. Murder by paint. Muwahaha…
