2025 marks 40 years since John 'Speedy' McCormack (Killoe) was nominated for an All-Star for the 2nd time, and 35 years since Dessie Barry (Longford Slashers) was nominated for an All-Star for the 3rd time. Both are in the Top 5 all time scorers for Longford in Senior Football.

Flashback to 2017 when the 1991 Seán Connollys U-13 Rounders team who won the All-Ireland title that year, lined out once more to take on the 2017 U-13 team. Team included the late Shane Carrigy. RIP.

We analysed Longford Senior Football Team Managers in competitive games over 60 years from 1965 to 2025 in Senior Championship (AISFC, AISFC Qualifiers, Leinster SFC, Tailteann Cup, Tommy Murphy Cup, All-Ireland 'B'), National League and O'Byrne Cup/Shield. Here are the results from those 707 games:

70 years ago today (11th Dec 1955) Clonguish won the Junior Football League title with 3-10 to nil victory over Abbeylara at Pearse Park.

It's convention day, so flashback 135 years to the first Longford GAA convention in 1890 which saw Shrule Leo's and Ballymahon O'Briens become Ballymahon Leo's, while a second club was affiliated in the parish of Drumlish (Ballinamuck 98's) and 2 became 1 in Dromard parish.

30 years ago today (10th Dec 1995) Mostrim won the Leader Cup (SFL) with 4-9 to 1-6 win over Killoe in a fiery final at Pearse Park. Winning captain was Gerry Lynn.

25 years ago today (10th Dec 2000) Abbeylara beat Cashel by 2-7 to 0-8 to win the Leader Cup (SFL) with captain Niall Sheridan scoring both goals as Abbey competed a unique League-Championship double.

75 years ago today (10th Dec 1950) Granard Hurling Club won the Cavan Hurling Championship with 5-3 to 1-1 win over Ballyhaise at Virginia. This is the one and only time a non-Cavan team won the Cavan Hurling Championship. Referee was W. Lambert.

Longford's first GAA League fixtures of 2026 will be on 24th January with hurlers vs Leitrim at Páirc Seán and footballers vs Waterford at Fraher Field.

From today's impressive and important Demographics Report by the GAA. Not sure about club numbers though. Aren't there 16 LGFA and 22 GAA clubs in Longford, with teams from adult and underage sections of, and/or independent teams derived from, those club units?

This year marks 35 years since Albert Fallon became the first Longford official to hold a position on the Leinster GAA Council executive when he became Vice-Chair. Three years later in 1993 he became the first Longford official to assume the role of Leinster GAA Chairman.

Longford's NFL game vs Antrim on 15th February 2026 at the Erins Own grounds in Cargin will be the first competitive game played by a Longford team at the club grounds at the northernmost point of Lough Neagh.

Yesterday’s victory by Longford Slashers in the U21 Hurling Championship final is a clean sweep of Hurling Championship titles (U14, U16, U18, U21, SHC) for the club in 2025. They are the first club to complete a clean sweep in hurling!
