She’s written too many songs that I think are genuinely great for me to dismiss her, but she’s relying on the same rhythms and phrasing she has for a very long time now, and it feels completely stale. It’s time to go away for awhile and fill the cup of inspiration back up.

I heard an interview with Taylor years ago where she said sometimes the songs come as divine inspiration and fully formed, but often you need to use the tools you’ve built to grind out a song. After listening to a few songs, it’s clear she hasn’t been divinely inspired for a few years now.
