I’m not saying you have to settle for anything. What I’m saying is, the establishment alternative may be all that’s left if your qualifications for a candidate are so rigid. It’s a very isolating way to judge the validity of people’s view of the world. It doesn’t create community.

I think you’re right about the lack of authenticity. It’s likely that no matter what his apology or explanation was for the posts and tattoo, those same people would’ve seized the opportunity to virtue signal and denounce him as a Nazi.
