"You can speak your mind plainly to me, Ferdinand." The urge to let an endearment slip out was nothing new, but it hardly felt appropriate for the early stages of their courtship.

"It simply struck me that this is our first trip away together, as a couple. That is all." Ferdinand mumbled the last part of his sentence as he set the mugs down with a clink.

"Oh." Is all Hubert could say.

"Know that I do not mention it out of expectation, I am aware that our relationship cannot come to light until after the war against our elusive foes has well and truly come to an end." Ferdinand sighed as he brought his mug to his plump lips. "I simply wish we could do something to mark the occasion."

If Hubert felt a tinge of jealousy at the cold metal touching Ferdinand's lips before Hubert could, then he hoped he hid it well as he spoke.

"There will be music this evening, the sound may extend to your room, perhaps we could dance."

Ferdinand brightened immediately, his characteristic smile beaming with a force that made Hubert cover his face with his mug.

"That is a marvellous idea! But will you not be caught entering my room?"

Hubert chuckled at that. "I think I can manage to evade detection."

"Wonderful!"

The bell tolled the changing hour seemingly startling to Ferdinand who jumped at the sound.

"I am afraid I must away to my next meeting, but I will see you before dinner, yes?" Ferdinand asked so tentatively as if Hubert could deny him anything if he wanted to.

"Of course. We shall reconvene at the meeting of the head of state this afternoon."

"Then I shall see you soon, my dear," Ferdinand lingered by the doorway, eyeing the flush that rose to Hubert’s cheeks at the endearment. He hesitated, as if rolling a great decision over in his mind, Hubert was about to ask what troubled him when a soft pair of lips grazed against Hubert’s cheek.

With a flourish, Ferdinand departed, leaving Hubert holding his cheek in his hand foolishly hoping to preserve the warmth that had passed between them.

Feeling unusually light in head and spirit, Hubert settled down to review the reports from his spies with a hint of a smile across his face.
