That being said, I am excited to hear from panelists (like Joe Wilson of Hospitality House and Armando Bravo Martinez, an RV resident) about potential solutions and what they envision for SF's future, especially as our population ages. This is a huge topic that doesn't get the attention it deserves
madisonalvarado.bsky.social
Totally agree that the lack of affordable housing is central to this crisis — sources have repeatedly hammered that point. Even with measures to create more housing for eligible seniors (like Prop G on last Nov's ballot), SF is in deep trouble. When you layer on safety net cuts, it's even more dire.

If you're interested in learning more about what is driving homelessness among seniors locally and in cities like Portland (where the doc was filmed), come to the screening or tune in to @kalwradio.bsky.social tomorrow at 10 am when I'll be chatting with @smkhalid58.bsky.social and others!

When local police are seen standing by as federal agencies damage communities, it can deepen distrust of local law enforcement long after federal personnel leave, said Donny Walters of the Ethical Society of Police, a police union advocating for reforms. “We’re left to deal with the carnage.” (7/7)

Bonds acknowledged that local police can face legal liability for interfering with immigration enforcement but also noted that there are ways to deescalate a situation that do not entail preventing an ICE agent from making an arrest (6/7)

In response to questions from supervisors and the public, SFPD issued new guidelines to officers in August instructing them to "only take actions necessary to safeguard life and property" such as rendering aid, responding to crime, directing traffic or deescalating conflict (5/7)

These scenarios have "an underlying assumption that the kind of people that ICE agents are targeting are violent or criminal,” she said, noting that many of the people being deported have minimal or no criminal history. Data shows detentions of people with no criminal history have risen (4/7)
Immigrants with no criminal convictions represent sharpest growth in ICE detention population
The number of people in ICE detention without criminal convictions nearly doubled in the last month — a significant increase compared to detainees who have been convicted of crimes.

Enter my best friend FOIA. Scenarios outlined in a training doc (seen here) reveal the lack of clear guidance for the tricky position officers might be in if ICE agents harm members of the public, which is what they should be trained to respond to, said Lauren Bonds of @npapjustice.bsky.social (3/7)
Screenshot of SFPD Powerpoint slide reads: "Scenarios
While on patrol you observe an ICE agent attempting to detain an individual. The individual then pulls out a hammer, strikes the ICE agent and runs from the scene. Can you?
A. Help the downed ICE officer?
B. Chase down the suspect?
C. Place the suspect under arrest and transport to the station?
While on patrol you are flagged down by a group of ICE agents. They inform you they have information that multiple undocumented immigrant MS-13 gang members are inside of an apartment building. They say they will do the raid and take everyone into custody, they just want you to park in the back alley to detour them from running out the back. Can you?
A. Park in the back alley during the raid?
B. Chase down any individuals running out the back?

Stellar reporting by @missionlocal.org documented ICE driving a van through activists and SFPD looking on as an agent pointed a rifle at a reporter. These incidents sparked conversations about how police are trained to handle the charged confrontations between ICE and protesters (2/7)

In SF, local police are not given specific guidance on how to respond to excessive use of force by ICE on civilians. But they are asked to consider what to do if a person being detained strikes an ICE agent with a hammer.

I dove into SFPD training records for ICE encounters in my latest piece (1/7)
SFPD Training for Responding to ICE Activity is Sparse
As ICE detains more immigrants and activists protest arrests, records shed light on the limited police training for volatile confrontations.

JUST IN

ICE agents arrested at least 2 people outside a San Francisco courthouse on Tuesday morning.

Video shows protesters surrounding an ICE mini-van with a man inside, banging on the van & opening its doors, trying to prevent the arrest.

Protests are growing outside court.

Throughout the rally, protesters chanted things like “When public services are under attack, what do we do? / Stand up, fight back!” and “When we fight, we win!”. People carried signs that read “PROTECT PUBLIC SERVICES, NOT PRIVATE GREED.”
madisonalvarado.bsky.social
Speakers talked about cuts to services like MUNI, public libraries, and mental health care. They also discussed the SRO Collaborative and Code Enforcement Outreach Program, which help tenants address unsafe living conditions. Those two programs would lose all city funding under the proposed budget.
A group of people are holding a green, black and white banner that says "CENTRAL CITY SRO COLLABORATIVE" with a drawing of several apartment buildings. Behind them, people stands on the steps of City Hall with posters.

“We're not going to let them take away our services—we're not going to let them balance the budget on the backs of our people,” said one speaker, calling on attendees to tell supervisors not to support Lurie's budget. “We’re not going to let San Francisco suffer because he decides that we need cuts”

Some snapshots from the People’s Budget Coalition rally today outside of City Hall. Over a thousand people attended, including members of a variety of unions, nonprofits and community-based orgs, to protest budget cuts proposed by Mayor Daniel Lurie. The city’s budget needs to be finalized by Aug. 1
Over one thousand people crowd the steps and street in front of San Francisco City Hall. A man in a purple and grey jacket yells into a bullhorn. In the background, people are holding signs and banners. Three women in purple shirts pose for a photo in front of the steps of City Hall. In the background dozens of people are holding orange and white signs on the steps of City Hall. A group of rally attendees hold orange and white signs. A man in a black t-shirt and hat holds a yellow sign in the shape of a house that says "Homes not Jails".

Today's action is the single largest mass-illegalization event in US history.

350,000 people woke up this morning with legal status, living and working here with official permission. They'll go to bed as undocumented immigrants facing deportation.

BREAKING: SCOTUS allows DHS to reinstate Sec. Kristi Noem's order ending Temporary Protected Status for many Venezuelans, but notes the decision does not address challenges to actions "purport[ing] to invalidate" related legal status, work authorization documents, etc., previously granted under TPS.
ORDER IN PENDING CASE
24A1059 NOEM, SEC., DHS, ET AL. V. NAT. TPS ALLIANCE, ET AL.
The application for stay presented to Justice Kagan and by
her referred to the Court is granted. The March 31, 2025 order
entered by the United States District Court for the Northern
District of California, case No. 3:25-cv-1766, is stayed pending
the disposition of the appeal in the United States Court of
Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and disposition of a petition for a
writ of certiorari, if such a writ is timely sought. Should
certiorari be denied, this stay shall terminate automatically.
In the event certiorari is granted, the stay shall terminate upon
the sending down of the judgment of this Court.
This order is without prejudice to any challenge to
Secretary Noem's February 3, 2025 vacatur notice insofar as it
purports to invalidate EADs, Forms I-797, Notices of Action, and
Forms I-94 issued with October 2, 2026 expiration dates. See
8 U. S. C. §1254a(d)(3).
Justice Jackson would deny the application.
