guys the world is literally horrible but anyway logging back on here to say that my dad got me the angel reese shoes (in pink!!!) for christmas. i love women’s sports so much and it means everything that my dad has been so excited to talk sports with me, and how much he likes women’s sports too #wbb

it’s understandable for a white author to not only write white characters
but yikes! what a disservice to the stories that people of color live every day, to only be reduced to outlines and passing descriptions.

it seems to me as though rachel reid remembered that there a lot of asian people in canada and wanted to have one in her novel, but didn’t actually know or care enough to find out how that would inform her writing or the character himself

shane is repeatedly described as hairless and naturally submissive to the point of excess in the novel, but his relationship to being half japanese and in a majority white sport is never explored as one of the factors that might prevent him from wanting to come out publicly #HeatedRivalry

i think that the Heated Rivalry book is at best poorly written and at worst genuinely racist
at a certain point, which i think we reach midway through Heated Rivalry, having an asian character whose only relationship to being asian is via sexual stereotypes is lazy, racist writing #HeatedRivalry
