One day the industry will recognize the drawbacks of AI agents and nondeterministic automation, and rediscover the UNIX philosophy of chaining together small purpose built tools in a low cost and predictable way, otherwise known as shell scripts.

I've been working with LLMs to create a set of topic-specific "API Coaches".

They're not "teachers" as they ss they 'prompt' the user through a series of questions and recommendations.

i'd love to hear from others who are doing similar things

In 1637, tulip bulbs sold for more than canal houses. Then the market crashed & everyone asked, what were we thinking?

Today’s AI boom feels familiar. We’re trading agents and copilots instead of bulbs, but the mania looks the same.

Passing tests ≠ production-ready.

AI-generated code often hides inefficiency and debt. Don’t confuse correctness with competence.

Correctness Isn’t Competence
AI-generated code risks becoming a liability in production unless we demand efficiency and quality.

I get asked all the time: “How should we add AI to our product?”

My answer is simple: Treat AI as a tool, not a feature.

And if you want AI to mean something in your work, put it to work where it counts — in building and sustaining products that last.

Stigmergy

Ever watched a line of ants carry food back to the nest? That’s stigmergy — and it’s the same idea I’ve been exploring in GRAIL, where software agents follow digital “trails” to reach their goals without a pre-written plan.
