A gothic novel about a man who feels nothing and a vampire who feels it all.
They yearn so hard it’s embarrassing

It was very important for me to write my protagonist in a way that made it clear his personality and behaviour did not come from trauma. I want to see more weirdos and freaks in books that were simply born like that. Seemingly unfeeling and unphased.

Until this moment, I was certain something had happened to shape him into this being. Perhaps it did, but it had not been shown to me when I consumed him. I believed seeing his life would make him clearer to me. Yet I find myself more lost than before. I cannot help but look upon this most unusual man in wonder. A picture of frailty, yet the strongest of all. Untouched and empty. I wish to linger upon these visions, yet the urgent demands of my own healing body pry me away. Now, sufficiently restored, I pierce a finger with my fang, then spread my blood onto the jagged wound upon his wrist.

My limbs succumb to weakness, head falling between my pillows. I close my eyes as Astaire’s blood mends every part of me, yet I refuse to relinquish him. I take the little strength I have left to keep him in my arms. I fear I have taken too much. Drained him irrevocably. Frustration builds with the realization that I do not yet have the power to revive him. Nevertheless, frustration cannot save him. I must wait; I must hope. And as I lie there, bound in this stillness, I let what was shown of Astaire’s life take root inside me.

“Tell me what you want?” I ask, stroking his hair slowly. “I want you to treat me like I treated you…” He presses out like a secret. “Like a piece of garbage?” I add. Abaś nods and swallows hard in response. “Yes,” his voice comes out rough and a bit shaky. “You want me to punish you for what you did?” I ask, and his eyes widen just a little. A movement almost too subtle to notice in the dim light of the bedroom. “Yes,” he whispers. I take his jaw between my fingers and stroke the corners of his mouth gently. He closes his eyes and parts his lips around my thumb, drawing it in and then biting down.

He is as he ever was, with translucent skin pulled delicately over his slender frame. The only thing betraying his state is the slightest change in the colour of his lips. What once was a pale russet has now faded into the dullest grey. I brush his hat away, tendrils unfurling, loosely draped around him like a crown. My fingers slip between the silken locks, longing to touch him, toi feel every part of his creamy skin beneath my calloused hands. Yet I dare not. I am consumed by the fear that I have taken too much, that my own hunger has undone him.

I refuse to look, cannot bear to lay eyes on his decaying form. “Let me drink from you, vellido.” His words slither out like poison. “What?” The word bursts forth before I can stop it. Even half-starved, what little blood remains in my veins seems to drain at the thought of his touch. The mere notion makes me want to wretch.

With utmost care, I arrange myself upon his thighs, striving to minimize the contact with his petrified flesh. “Give me a kiss, my son,” he whispers like a serpent luring its prey. I avert my gaze, unwilling to behold the visage that has haunted me since boyhood. Reluctantly, I press my mouth to the tear across his cheek, where the muscles of his jaw gape through ruined remnants of his teeth.

It chooses the path to the black maw calling to it in the distance. It drags and crawls. Rolls and slithers. Wields the effort of a lifetime to fulfill its most desperate need. The blackness calls to it like the sweetest song. Like a piper. It pushes through a sea of its peers. They laugh and jeer as it passes, ridiculing its efforts. But the drop doesn’t listen. The drop doesn’t look.

A mixture of sounds and colours tries to inundate me. The scraping of rock on rock, whispered words as soft as suede. A swirl made up of the darkest shadows, crimson rivers, and gleaming fire. With each encounter, I feel him coming to life. Pulse accelerating, flesh agitated, mind loosening. An eagerness grows within me. An urge to know more. What would it be like to see more through his eyes? Would it be so amiss to hope that within his memories, I was devoid of all that I am forced to carry? That there, I was neither weak nor monstrous, but something gentler, far kinder than I truly am?

I close my eyes, awaiting my own demise, for the last breath to leave my body. But the silence does not claim me. Instead, a soft, choked sound creeps into my ears, a gurgling, faint and wet. I ignore it. Some final rattle of the damned, I think. Something deep within me stirs, a sort of fluttering of breath. Perhaps it was Lucifer himself, descended upon this realm to claim me. I open my arms wide to welcome death with joy, but my torment does not end, for I continue to feel the agony of despair as I did before. Still, I remain. Still, I suffer.
