Today’s “urgent calls” for the IMF / World Bank to “replenish the coffers” only renew that same cycle of punishment. Mainstream economists begging the financial punisher of the Global North to save the Global South is like asking the arsonist to fund the fire brigade.
Ever since Susan George wrote How the Other Half Dies (1976) and, in fact, long before that, the IMF has been in the business of stripping so-called “developing” countries of their dignity and sovereignty. It has always been less a lender than an enforcer for the global financial order.
We should ask: how much worse will it get before enough people push back and boycot that shitty social network? Meta doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. Let’s call them out, demand accountability, and build alternatives like Bluesky that don’t monetize our attention or spread conspiracies.
