Actually it was fueled by Hegseth's idiocy. Any unwarranted outrage is entirely on him for bungling the announcement so badly. (And personally, I think establishing a Qatari (Hamas supporter) facility was a terrible idea in the first place - Note that 2017 was during Trump's first term..)
