Last month, SA announced the marine sanctuary at Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island, will now be 20 sq km bigger, protecting breeding & feeding grounds for endangered Aus sea lions. 🦭

Thanks to all the AMCS and TWiS supporters who took action earlier this year to support strong marine sanctuary expansions.

A new report finds global plastic pollution will DOUBLE by 2040 without urgent, transformational action.

But if govts & companies act immediately, plastic pollution can be cut by 83% by 2040. The Aus Govt must deliver promised packaging reform & continue pushing for a strong Global Plastics Treaty.

This is the impact you can have!

Throughout 2025, hundreds of you helped collect data in supermarkets across Australia. The results made national headlines, spotlighting the changes needed to supermarkets’ use of disposable plastics.

Cip Hamilton, our Plastics Campaign Manager, recently walked through a major supermarket with one of Australia’s leading newspapers.

They saw cobs of corn placed on a hard plastic tray wrapped in soft plastic and all sorts of other disposable packaging destined for the bin as soon as it’s opened.
Plastic not fantastic: Why you pay less for pointless packaging
We took a walk with leading plastics campaigner Cip Hamilton through a supermarket to search for wasteful wrapping. It didn’t take long.

A 're-use only precinct' is also planned in the Sydney CBD by 2027. The NSW EPA's Plastics Plan 2.0 includes strong steps forward, especially on initiatives to increase reuse systems for takeaway cups. 🥤☕

Now the federal govt needs to step up & deliver its promised reform packaging legislation.

Last year, we advocated for marine wildlife at a series of stakeholder engagement sessions that helped decide what would be included in this plan. We also encouraged supporters to have their say. The results were loud and clear: on average, 90% of people agreed with the NSW EPA's proposed actions.

On World Fisheries day, we reflect on the path forward for our fisheries. What we know for sure is, the future of our ocean relies on sustainable fisheries. If we don’t fish for the future, we won’t be fishing in the future.

The positive results show that govts can make a big difference when they take plastic pollution seriously. But there's much more work to do in stopping plastic from ending up as pollution on land and in our ocean.

Plastic still makes up most of the littered items, including food & drink packaging.

The Albanese Government is set to reform Australia’s nature laws.

➡️ AMCS is calling for four essential changes:

1. Strong rules for nature protection.

2. Close the loopholes. End deforestation in the Great Barrier Reef catchment.

3. An independent referee.

4. Climate impacts in every decision.

An environmental catastrophe is taking place along northern Australia’s remote coastlines. Indigenous Rangers and volunteers are removing hundreds of these ghost nets, but the funding is running out. ⌛

We call on the Albanese Government to reinstate full funding for the Ghost Nets Initiative.
