Jacob Maris painted this so-called bluff-bowed ship on the beach in Scheveningen. Coastal villages didn’t have a harbour, so ships had to set sail straight from the beach and return there again. Horses helped them get in and out of the water. 🐴⛵

The exhibition "Between the threads of time. The tapestry Abduction of the Sabine Women and the story of its restoration" in the Palace of the Grand Dukes of #Lithuania, Vilnius.

The tapestry created at the Royal Aubusson Manufactory (?) (#France🇫🇷) in the mid-18th century.

Most notably, Wanstead House (Its gardens now form the municipal Wanstead Park) influenced the design of the #WhiteHouse in Washington DC, where an exact copy of the portico at Wanstead was reproducing for official residence of the president of #US.

If I were a thief, 🥷I would steal this painting from #Louvre. "Le maréchal Ney à la redoute de Kowno" (Marshal Ney at the #Kaunas' redoubt) by Auguste Raffet, 1839. Sadly, it is not in the exposition.

The Altar of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral Basilica of #Kaunas. after restoration.

It is the oldest wooden altar in the church, which was erected in 1503 by the Blessed Virgin Mary litterateurs brotherhood. It was redecorated in XVII c.

In the middle of #Kaunas' Oak Grove, the largest urban stand of mature oaks in Europe, you can find an athlete sculpture, which was built during the First Lithuanian National Olympiad. This event was held in Kaunas on July 17-31, 1938.

It is #Kaunas' Pompeii. XVII c. ruins, where archeologists found not only prison with chains, potteries, but also parts of Antique statues etc. The rich merchants lived here, who properties were demolished by Russian and Swedish armies in 1655. #Lithuania🇱🇹️.

The grave of Lithuanian doctor Jokūbas Šimkevičius (1775-1818) in the old cemetery of Taukeliai. He was a pioneer in pediatric medicine and an advocate for the temperance movement in #Lithuania🇱🇹️, as well as a prominent figure in society, a philanthropist, and a Freemason.

Mykolas Krupavičius (1885-1970) was a Lithuanian priest and politician. He is best known for his involvement with the land reform in the interwar #Lithuania🇱🇹️. In this photograph, he is posing as beduin in the Northern #Africa (1929).

The most beautiful accent of St. Barbara church's (Pašilė village, #Lithuania🇱🇹️) interior decor is the painting "The Crucifixion" by count Stanislovas Feliksas Čėsnas Kosakovskis (1795-1872).

Saint Barbara church (1789) in Pašilė village, #Lithuania🇱🇹️. Now and in 1895.

During the Soviet occupation it was closed and converted to the cinema theatre.

Very beautiful cute fun nice adorable stone puppy statue 🐕named Dog Keksas (2013 by Lithuanian sculptor Ričardas Širvelis) stands in the middle of the Old Town (#Lithuania) independence). You must rub his nose and it will bring you good luck.

I'm addicted to Ottoman war drums. These two XVII c. drums were taken by Lithuanian army and are exposing in the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul now, Vilnius #Lithuania.

"Napoleon, a life in Gardens and Shadows" by Ruth Scurr is definitely one of the most interesting books, which I have ever read.

We know #Napoleon as the great military leader, as the Emperor, the reformer or even a lover, but did you know, that he passionately loved gardening.

The most famous Cherubs (detail of the Sistine Madonna) by Raphael have their twins in #Kaunas, #Lithuania🇱🇹️. The XVIII c. wall of Church of Saint Nicholas (XV c.) was decorared with Two Cherubs by unknown Lithuanian sculptor.

Did you know? During #WWI (when #Lithuania was occupied by the Imperial #Germany), this house was the German soldiers’ recreation house, where soldiers came from the battlefield to regain their strengths. It was like a German hostel in the middle of #Kaunas.

During Napoleon's crossing of the Niemen River ( #Lithuania) in 1812, his horse was startled by a rabbit (23 June) and threw him to the ground. While Napoleon only sustained a bruised hip, the general staff seen it as a bad omen. This is the exact place, where this incident happened in #Kaunas.

St. Virgin Mary church in Kulva village, #Lithuania🇱🇹️.

It is believed that the first Catholic wooden chapel in Kulva was built in XVI c. In 1647 the brick chapel was built. During #WWII, the church was badly damaged. Currently, only the belfry is open.
