On May 11, 1913, veteran race driver Billy Knipper and his dog "Peppers" were in his Henderson car. Knipper raced in the 1913 Indy 500. He started 20th, finished 16th. He raced in three Indianapolis 500 Mile Races in 1911, 1913, and 1914. Indy Star photo. www.firstsuperspeedway.com/photo-galler...

Barney Oldfield and Lightning Benz, aka Blitzen Benz. He purchased this car in January 1910, intending to set a land-speed record on the sands of Daytona-Ormond Beach. He accomplished this in March 1910, covering a mile from a flying start at 131.7 MPH. www.firstsuperspeedway.com/photo-galler...

December 18, 1909. National Motor Vehicle Company star driver Johnny Aitken, in the National stock car racer, drove in time trials at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The first event was held at the track after it was paved with 3.2 million bricks.
