Mark’s Movie Picks: “God & Country” (2024). A documentary that delves deeply into the history of Christian Nationalism, and how we have ended up with the mess we are in within the United States today. The late, great Rob Reiner served as the Executive Producer. I give it an A.

Mark’s Prog Rock Promenade: “A Giddy Thing” by Big Big Train (1997). Taken from the British band’s 2nd album, “English Boy Wonders,” this was written—like so many others in the band’s canon— by guitarist/keyboardist Gregory Spawton. It opens with a nifty 7/8 instrumental section.

Mark’s Movie Picks: “Scrooged” (1998). Bill Murray at his snarky best as a self-obsessed TV tycoon (Frank Cross) who's visited by three ghosts of Christmas Past, Present & Future. Utilizing the Dickens’ story as a model, he goes through a similar transformation as Mr. Scrooge. I give it an A-.

Mark’s Prog Rock Promenade: “Stargazer” by Rainbow (1976). A tour de force from Ritchie Blackmore and company’s 2nd album, “Rising.” In my mind, this ranks alongside Zep’s “Kashmir” at the zenith of exotic hard rock at its best.

More of our wondrous world: Frost flowers in Norway. They're created when moisture from seawater rises into the frigid air & condenses around imperfections in the ice surface. As more vapor freezes, the crystals grow outwards, forming intricate, structures that reach several centimeters in height.

Mark’s Movie Picks: “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006). Writer/Director Guillermo del Toro’s gruesome fairy tale is brimming w/ imagination & is a visual feast, at times it is hard to follow. But one can’t help but be engaged. Won 3 Oscars, including Cinematography and Best Art Direction. I give it an B+.

Mark’s Movie Pics: “The Reader” (2008). An intense film set in post-WWII Germany of the 50s/60s.
It delves deeply into right vs. wrong &how they are interpreted in different ways by various people. It is a difficult story to be sure, and one that generates a landslide of questions.
I give it an A.
